I have a 2006 Cooper S convertible. Noticed the automatic transmission jerks when shifting to 2nd gear and sometime on 3rd gear. Appears to happen when car is warm. Any of you had this happen to them or familiar with this issue that can provide feedback?
I am trying to diagnose the problem before attempt taking it to the doctor, and hoping it's a fixable problem where I don't have to take mortgage my house. Thank you so much.
Sorry to see no one is responding. I don’t have an automatic, but from reading the threads about these issues there seem to be a lot of problems with the autos. Search on the internet with, North American in the search string and you will find the threads. Good luck.
The problem comes into play because MINI advertised that the transmission had 'lifetime' fluid. Their definition of a lifetime seemed to be 70/80,000 miles. Such is not the case. From what I have read, the transmission fluid should be changed every 33/50,000 miles. It may help if you change your transmission fluid: however, it may be that you need a new valve body. It seems dealers don't want to do this work...they want to sell you a new transmission for $6,000.00 and up. Look for an independant shop that can do the work and they are few and far between. Good luck... PS I am looking for a transmission in Cincinnati, Oh and so far I haven't found one, :(
My neighbor had issues with hers when she hit the 100K mile mark, so after a few conversations with MINI we decided she should have her transmission fluid and filter changed and after the service technician did a FLASH update to the Transmission Control Module, it helped and for the most part is happy with the way it is working now. She is up to 145K on her R52.
You likely need a valve body replacement. Search on aisin transmission failed in the problems forum. Big big thread on it. Looking at about $1500 to repair, but should work well afterwards.

a valve body change on that car is about 2 hours and you can do it yourself. Trying to find the valve body that doesn’t cost more than the car is worth is a whole different ball game. If the car is still shifting through all gears, have the fluid changed and then redo the adaptations and see if that fixes the problem.

valve body replacement along with new selenoids should fix that ....if you re mechanical you can service your valve body for under $300 and the selenoids by dyi,along with new tranny fluid which is a lot cheaper then replacing the valve body. it is intensive work however as there are probably over hundred pieces in a valve body and 90% are specific and have to go back exactly in the same location in a specific order. if you re not mechanical type and have experience working with power tools i do not recommend you try this yourself. also im skeptical that it takes 2hrs to change the valve body, as on a first gen mini cooper s r53 in a typical home garage with no hoist it takes 5-7 hrs and even longer for someone who has never done it. i m assuming the procedure for the rag top are the same.
