This 05 cooper s i purchased i made sure the top works. I parked it one day and took the battery to advance auto for recharging. I now cranked it and the top only opens half way, so basically, the 1st segment, something similar to a sunroof. The rest won't open. I looked in the back and founf the locking mechanisms used for folding the top if needed, and those are locked. Heard people talking about a micro switch, but couldn't find anywhere where it is and how it looks like. Any help is appreciated.
Check the rear parcel deck in the trunk. It has to be in the lower position and foot of the parcel shelf rest on the micro switch in the trunk that is on the rear left panel. If it off a bit you cannot open the top past sunroof position.
You mean the shelf? Yes, it's removable. You'd also have to unhook the two cords with dangling ***** (ahem) where they attach to the hinged part of the roof. You need to slide off small plastic retainers that prevent the cord loop from coming off by itself.
did you ever get your top working? My driver-side slider broke so I replaced it, but then the motor striped (probably due to my install), so I replaced that as well. Now, my top won't do the second step. The latches pull back, the windows go down, the top slides completely back and then the red light flashes and it won't do anything. I actually have to turn the key off and back on to get the roof to slide back forward.
Anyone have any ideas what's wrong? Oh, yeah, I have a 2005 mcs with about 113k miles.

Reason: add my car info
Nugget - I have a couple threads with convertible top problems going on. I think the cables are not moving back a little more which unlocks the hooks located in the rail system right above the side rear window. You can see in the video someone made I posted up in the other thread. On the top is binding a little due to the hinges not being oiled / greased in the rear.
The top won't open to sun roof position. (it keeps closed) No red flashes. I checked the shelf and is in down position. I do the "windows up & down" and nothing happened. When I press the "top down" buttom I heard a little "click" from the booth, near the top module. No motor noise, just a "click" noise.
I checked the fuses in the driver's side and seems fine.
Hi ECSTuning, I broke down and called my local dealer (250 miles away). They sent me to the service manager, who called a guy over to the phone. He asked me what I'd done to the car. I told him about replacing the driver side slider, then the motor going out and having to replace it, then the top not going all the way down. He said there's 2 hall sensors in the actual top, one of which is at the quote "what we call here the 75% point" and if the cable doesn't register in the tube at that point, the top won't go down.
He said I need to pull the sunroof back half way, release the gates and pull them back, and reset them to the same length (like in the youtube video I'm guessing). I told him I didn't replace the gate along with the slider but that I've got it working kind of okay, and he said they ALWAYS replace the gate with the slider and he recommended that I do that -that it'll drag on the old gate because of the design change. The dealer was very helpful, actually.
Thanks for your post, it's nice to get that kind of support. I'm taking the whole top apart again this weekend and replacing that one gate at the same time. I'll report back if that's the fix.
Just a follow up, I put the new gate on with the new slider on the driver side, put it all back together in the "locked up/closed" position. Top goes down fine, and the new gate has no resistance like it did before (it didn't want to slide on the old gate) - if you do the slider mechanisms you really should do the gates as well.
Trying to decide if I should sell this now that it's working.....I do like the 2011 135 convertible.....someone talk me out of it.
Anarchy, your situation seems like you've got something tell the top not to open. You could take it apart and release the mechanisms manually, and then see if there's something broken as you're doing that? You may find out that one of the cables are broken or one of the sliders or something? Maybe by doing that and putting it back it'll put something back in place that has somehow gone wrong. It's a few hours' process, but short of that I can't think of how you'd figure it out other than taking it to the dealer. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. What you are saying is to manualy open the top to the "sun roof" position and check the cables and mechanism? I the have time to do it, just have to find how and do it right (not breaking stuff)
I guess I'll have to do a better search in the forum...
This may help but I don't know if this is the right thing to do in my case because the common symptom on the top issues is that a cable or anything else breaks and only opens one side, also makes some cracking noise in the process. My car don't make any "broken" noise (as I remembered) and not open any side of the sun roof.
Yes, that would be what I would do. Follow that Youtube (4 parts) on how he breaks it down, and then how he puts it back together. That will allow you to see if there's a disconnect in the process. Time consuming, I've done it, and pushing the "slider" back with the screwdriver to unlock the sunroof slider mechanism is a little frustrating.
Be careful putting the motor back in, and make sure the gears are engaged and the motor is flush before putting the 3 allen screws in to mount the motor back. Be patient with it, and don't force it. If the motor isn't flush and you try to use the screws to force the motor up into the hole, you'll break the motor/gears and they'll strip and you'll have to buy a new one for $270. Believe me.....
Sumary: The top wasn't opening. Not even the sun roof position, all the things where ok in the boot and when I pressed the "open top" buttom, I only herd a little click sound, no red flashes. Nothing more.
I opened the plastic cover for the "sun roof mechanism" to see how things were there and I found an unplugged cable. Put it where it should be, and DONE. Aparently this plug fall off because of the constant movement when the top is closing and hit the catch hook on cowl. I've also found a loose bolt (1 of the 3 holding the motor)
