got hit today...

Hi all,

I was waiting at a red light this morning, light turns green, I stalled (first time in years! grumble...) and the guy behind me goes anyway and nails me at probably 3-ish mph.
The guy wants to take care of it w/o ins, at first I balked and was ready to call the cops, but it turns out he works at the same company I do, so i figured I'd give him the courtesy.

Bumper looks reasonably beat up, and one of my backup sensors is dead (I've personally replaced one of them before, so i am familiar with that cost and trouble).

I was wondering what a new bumper plus painting(BRG) (in the greater NY area) might reasonably run. Going to swing by a repair shop later today to get a quote, but instead of getting like 3 quotes, I'd rather just compare to the forum's wisdom...

Also, what else should I be looking for as far as damaged stuff? Do bumper carriers usually need replacing in this situation? I'll pull the bumper this weekend and see what I see, but what should I be looking for? How much more than just a bumper should I expect this to cost?

thanks

Regardless of where the guy works and how well you know him, you should take steps to protect yourself. Get three estimates and write-up a simple agreement that states that if you find hidden damage during the repair that he will cover that expense also. You will be shocked at how much everything costs and I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to submit a claim.

Good advice. but once the bids are in he may be surprised. Unless he has a lot of money sitting around.

I would get 3 for sure unless you trust the one shop very well.

there's a "reason" he doesn't want to submit a claim that I'd rather not type out explicitly.
I recognize that the damage is likely higher than shown on the outside, and that until the shop has the bumper off and is poking around that things may be unknown. That's why i'm asking what i should be looking for when i pull the bumper to inspect this weekend -- what's typical for very low impact bumper collisions on the R52s? What are some things that might get overlooked initially?

thanks

You might start a new thread with a more descriptive title for what you are looking for to attract specific answers to your questions. Something like..

Help me Diagnose my accident damage...

hey, not a bad idea, thanks.

Any idea how to delete this thread? Don't want to get in trouble for double-posting...

I can't help with all your questions and I'm in Indiana, so prices might not translate to NY, but my bumper got hit & cracked/chipped off the paint on the drivers side. The local body shop charged just under $250.00 to strip and repaint the whole bumper.

This bumper's definitely not just repaintable -- it got bent around the bumper hanger and/or whatever else is behind the bumper, so now it's no longer the original shape.
I'm also concerned about what's going on behind the bumper, but it's pouring out now, so i'll have to check in there another day...

If someone gives you flak for a double post just ask them to delete the post. But I doubt it is any big deal. Oh yeah, post pics of the damage, it will help tremendously.

Here's a shot inside. It looks pretty decent in there.

Anyone see anything problematic?

I'll replace the bumper cover because the plastic got messed up pretty well, but otherwise, i think it is okay.

Is it conceivable that there's damage underneath/a bent frame/etc that i need to watch out for?

I have PDC sensors in the car -- there is the part, 51127048723, PDC bracket -- do i have to get and paint new ones, or do the old ones come out? They're fine on my bumper, but i didn't think to see if they're removable when i had the bumper off yesterday.

thanks
