Buy extended service package or not?
Hello all, new here, sort of, used to view the site when we had our 05 MCS. I just purchased a CPO'ed, 08 Cooper S (sidewalk), 18,500 miles, Convenience, Cold Weather and Sidewalk package, with Limited slip dif. Guess I have 2 questions... 1 - Should I buy the extended service plan? seems like most who have, haven't really gotten their money's worth. 2 - At $21,400, did a i get a good deal. Extremely clean car, clean carfax, and CPO warranty. Thanks for any replies.
What I would do is look at the maintenance schedule and see what would need to be done. Then price it out. Remember that oil changes are scheduled maintenance at 15k intervals. That seems a bit high for me to go between changes 7500 miles is more like it. I discussed this with our MA b4 ordering, He told us that we don't have to make a decision on it until we get to either to the 3yr or 36k mark. The only caveat is that it might go up in cost.
The 3yr ended this week, 2 days before I bought the car, dealer says I have 30 days to extend. Knowing how much it will be driven, have a feeling I will only get maybe 2-3 oil changes covered and the inspection I, does that add up to $2,500?
For some people the extended warranty has come in handy. For others it turns out to be wasted money.. Ya just never know so you have to look at it as an insurance policy.
I don't usually buy them and didn't on my MINI and I haven't had any reason to have used it if I did..

I do not think the maintenance package would be worth $2,500. Even at a dealership, oil changes are going to run about $100 each. Inspection I would probably run ~$400 in inflated dealership prices. Even if they did a full brake job for $1,000 you are still losing money.
Based on the info you've provided, I would think you would be better off saving the money and using it for maintenance expenses as they come due and trying to find some less expensive sources than the dealership.

Thanks everyone for the responses, it seems that I will probably skip the maintenance package. The CPO warranty on this car is 2 days short of a full 3 years and the mileage is so low I have 82,000 miles left. It sounds like with the intervals the way they are for service, that the Maintenance contract may not be worth it. so thanks again for all the input.

You didn't specify the terms to the extended service warranty. How long (years) and how many miles?
I one time financed a car thru my credit union and bought an extended warrany thru their source and it did give a refund if you never used the warranty!!!
Of course if you bought a 4 year 80,000 mile warranty you had to wait till which ever came last the 4 years or the 80,000 miles before getting your money back, which I did on a Sebring...

Bought a new R56 in early in 2007. Bought a third-party extended warranty in early 2009 when I had about 40,000 miles on my MINI S. Early this year I had a timing chain guide let go, which left the MINI quite drivable but the noise was a little worrisome until I could get it in for service. I had about 72,000 miles on the clock at that point.
The fix would have been over $2,500 without the warranty. I had the head cleaned of carbon - at my expense - while it was off, so the tab came to about $350.
A month ago the yellow engine service light came on so I got to the dealer that afternoon. Turns out the thermostat was misbehaving & needed replacement. Without that EW it woulda cost me $550.
I still have 20,000 miles on the EW & it's transferrable should I decide to move into something different.
In hindsight think the EW was well worth it....
OTOH I drove an R53 for 4-1/2 years, 133,000 miles & never had need of anything the factory warranty didn't cover. YMMV.

EW's are different then Extended Service. What exactly does MINI cover with the extended service, it doesn't make too much sense to me. What happens if service is needed because of a failed part? For example brake calipers or antilock brake controller. Assume 50k miles. Part is not covered but is the service?

I bought my 07 R56 used, private party, and the seller purchased the extended warranty. I'm glad he did, because just this year I've had the transmission mount replaced, new fuel pump, new ignition module, passenger airbag sensor, auxiliary lighter, key fob, and sunroof screen fixed for free.

I purchased my 2006 from a Nissan Dealer. They offered a full warranty 5 yr 100000 miles for $1900 which is underwritten by Nissan. I ask if I could think about it and they said I had a couple weeks to make a desision. I shoped around and decided this was a great deal, so I went for it. 1 year and 8000 miles later I have not used it. Time will tell. Mini's seem to be pretty good cars and they dont break too often but when they do, they are expensive to fix.
