wife's top wont open and there is a small cable exposed, what is it

Hi all
I've been reading the archives with how to determine if the cable has broken, I'm fairly certain that the pass cable let go as the pass latch will not release once the roof attempts to more into full roof down position. When trying to figure out what the problem was, I noticed this thin cable sticking out just in front of the roll bar on the pass side. Can anyone advise me on what it is and why it might be showing?
Thanks in advance

Just by reading the title and not what you posted, I was going to suggest the underwire in one of the cups broke through.

But since I've read the entire post, I suspect that's not the case.

Looks like a tension cable has come loose as you suspected. There is one on each side. This should be a warranty fix unless your beyond the period. Have a look here for diagrams and part numbers. I also have a PDF on how to replace the cable(s) if you decide to tackle this yourself.

Could that tension cable be the culprit for the roof not being able to retract?

Can you post or send me that PDF? I have been going nuts trying to find why my top will not go past the latches releasing on the second stage of the opening. Hope maybe that file might give me a little in site

Does Mini have a service/maintenance routine for the convertible top? Considering there's so many moving parts (joints, cable, gears), you would think periodic lubrication is necessary.

Well I got very lucky Last night. Sort of. I notices that one of the back windows was slightly down yesterday and it appears to be off track. The bad part is that you really need the top down to do much about this.

I had pulled the tops motor out last week and decided to put it back. Last time I messed with it a screw fell between the seats and I could not get it. Ever since then the top did not work.

Well i got the screw and put everything back and tighten all three screws. I then turned the emergency crnnk slightly and it clicked. This was a new thing.

So the moment came and I hit the button. The first position worked as usual. I then held my breath and tried it. First I heard a bad noise but realized it was that window. Then it unclamped like it had been doing... then suddenly it rose up and retracted.

So all my issues came from a screw...one screw. Make sure if you ever have to remove the motor to mess with those cables that you get all three in and tight. I am so happy now. going to try to get the window resolved tomorrow morning...then road trip...FINALLY

Thanks everyone for your help and ideas!!!! GRNGYNT is topless again!!!!!

Of course it is now 100 degrees out...LOL
