Some guy made a jet powered MINI. If you do a search on NAM you should be able to find it.

That's the car I saw at SEMA. It's a helicopter turbine engine that is hooked up to the rear wheels. The regular supercharged MCS motor still drives the front wheels. From the outside, with the boot closed, the car looks like a stock silver MCS. The pipes going up are the turbine exhausts. They go to oval holes in the roof that slide closed when the turbine isn't operating. It was an impressively engineered machine.

Does it work?? Can you actually drive the thing around? Pretty nuts...and it must be really loud inside.

Yep, looks like a Rolls-Royce 250-C20J which is a standard Bell Jet Ranger engine. Talk abount instant torque....

And yes, hearing protection would be required.

The company that was displaying at SEMA is Marine Turbine. Their website hasn't been updated in a while and doesn't mention the MINI but does advertise their turbine powered motorbikes making 320hp moving 500 pounds of bike.
DaFlake, you're right. Looks like they have an ongoing relationship with Rolls Royce for their turbine engines.

They must put in another a/c system to combat the heat.

A little different way to have a variable displacement engine.

If that is the case, they can keep it! There is not enough places for me to put my junk anyway.

Here's a slightly wider shot that I took.

It is an MCS, running the stock 16" v-spoke wheels.
I don't remember if the rear cupholder is still there, but the rear seats were definitely gone.
