Kelly Blue Book MC40 Value

I just checked the KBB site this morning and they have an MC40 box on the option list now.

I checked the value of mine and it came out to about $24,550 trade, $27,405 private sale, and $30,230 retail.

I have less than 9,000 miles and checked the condition as being excellent.

I was not sure if the leather seats and premium wheels should be checked separately or not, so that could affect their calculations.

These figures seem high to me. I'd be surprised if I could get $24K at a trade or $27K private sale, and really surprised if a dealer could get $30K for it.

What do you guys think?

KBB is historically WAY high. Knock $5k off of each of those numbers, and you may be in the ballpark.

Leather seats and R90s are part of the MC40 package so forget about those

You can't use the "excellent" ... read carefully, only 5% of the cars rate that. You might think its perfect but you can take it to the bank, its not what THEY think is excellent. So now, for trade-in, your down to $22,800.

As already said ... KBB is notoriously high. These guides are just that ... guidelines ... and mean nothing when it comes to actually selling the car. I too would knock $5K off the prices to be realistic so your looking at maybe

18K trade. $21K private sale.

The "retail price" is truly ridiculous since these cars sat on dealers lot at $27K without selling for up to a year after coming up ... unsold at MSRP. No one in their right mind is going to pay $30K retail now ... even if the car had never been registered.

Finally, since I know and sold mine 4 months ago to a dealer. Remember, MC40 is nothing but a option box, just like "convience package".

The ONLY thing that matters to a dealer is how quickly they can turn the car around to make a profit. Dealers go by the most recent wholesale auction prices in your area ... your region of the country. Since MC40s are so few, this is a bit more difficult ... I had full JCW everything and it took two independent appraisers more than an hour each to decide (and they happened to be identical offers independently).

If you "really" want to know, just take the car to carmax and ask. It will cost you nothing.

My guess ... $17,500

Sorry if that sounds depressing but thats a bit of reality. If you get more ... SMILE

Edmunds: closer to reality

It's been said here before but, www.edmunds.com does a much more realistic job at car values than kbb or nadaguides. See here: http://www.edmunds.com/tmv/used/mini/index.html

But Edmunds does NOT list the MC40 as an option as the others do.

kbb was unreasonably high for my car.

edmunds was pretty much dead on. my car is only a few months old and I detail it better than most pro's do so the paint and interior is in oustanding condition (better than factory!) it said my car was worth 20-21k, which it is worth. I could get 20k for it rather quickly. I have limited slip differential, dsc, harmon kardon, cold weather package, front fogs and factory driving lamps, all with chromeline. apparently i get -60 dollars for it being all british racing green

down with turbo's, longer mini's and fugly interiors!

a while ago i came across an mc40 at a dealer w/ only 4000 miles. it was in pretty good shape inside out and mechanically, or basically new. it was priced at 24k for a long time and nobody would buy it, so they ended up selling it for just under 20k. and that got me real jaded about limited edition cars, as in a lot of the times they don't sell for as much as they seem they would but quite the opposite. so w/ that said, maybe you should pretend you don't have the mc40 package and price it accordingly

and as some of the others said, kbb is kind of a scam, price way too high (so perhaps dealers can always say they're "below kbb"?). edmunds tmv is much more useful and accurate

Exactly. In fact, the appraiser told me that contratry to the thinking ... car makers throw out all kinds of special editions and in the used car market ... they DETRACT from the value of the car in many circumstances. You have to have a buyer who wants that package and its not going to get the value as originally price because so few ppl want them. Its like a SCAM and why I believe GPs will NOT be worth what ppl are hoping they will be.

Not true. While it will add some, its not worth anywhere near the $6K plus to originally buy it. Maybe at $1K. It WILL be worth more on 06 cars factored ordered but not an an 05 and earlier car bolted on by the dealer. Hard facts of used car life

To get a realistic trade in value for your car Edmunds is the best resource. Pick you car, colors, options and miles. Rate your car as average and you will be within several hundred dollars of the actual trade in value.

I use this all the time and it's pretty accurate.
