Popping sound inside?

I havent called the dealer yet, but when I`m driving and let on and off the gas I can hear a loud popping sound coming from the pass rear corner. Does anyone know if there is a fresh air vent back there? My old thunderbird had one, it was just like a little flappy door about 5x3" presumably to equalize pressure when driving or let moisture out or something.

Do you own a 2005 or 2005 Cooper S? If so then the popping sound is normal. I for one love the feature.

Its not the exhaust. I know the burble that it makes. This is a one time pop when I left off the gas, and another when I step back on it coming from INSIDE the vehicle.

other possiblities:
1. something loose somewhere in the cabin
2. busted motor mount... in 05's and 06's they made a change for the worse and i personally experienced a pop sound when letting off and getting on the throttle... but mine was more of a muffled "pump" sound. as in, it actually sounded like the word pump was being made from inside the cabin.

is your "pop" sound high pitched or more like my "pump" sound?

Cant be a motor mount, as its coming from the passenger side rear corner, nothing loose in the cabin either. Cleaned the car this weekend. This is more of a sound like my gas mask makes when we have to do the vaccum checks on it and the plastic bows back and forth.

it could be the little ***** on the ends of your trunk lid thingy. i know when I had mine that they hit the sides of the trunk under heavy cornering.

Beat me to it...

Also check inside the little flap on the PS side of the boot in case something's come adrift in there...

I'd suggest checking the rear shocks for either a bad shock, loose shock or one of the rubber bushings has deteriorated and fell off. Also check the sway bar end links. Best of luck to ya!

would be really interested in learning what's making the noise. i too am experiencing a "pop" or "knock" during acceleration or letting off the gas. too busy right now to take it into the shop to get it checked.

If you want to do a quick check to see if it's the exhaust "burble" that's been engineered in, take a quick spin with the hatch partly open. You'll hear the popping out the back of the exhaust. Do keep the fan on so you don't asphyxiate yourself, and don't downshift TOO much (but it DOES sound Really Good...).

Sounds like your talking about the exhaust burble, some people on NAM have reported that this burble stopped suddenly one day and they can't get it back. Some love it some hate it. But it's a common feature in 2005 and 2006 MINI's

I can guarantee everyone it is NOT the exhaust burble. Called the dealer yesterday and made appointment for friday. That was the first thing they asked was is it the exhaust? Are you sure? It sounds like either something in the suspension mounting, or something vaccum operated popping back and forth (like the way a piece of plastic makes the popping sound as you pop it out of its original position and back into it. And its not the empty beer can in the trunk either.

Well I talked to the dealer and the first response I got was they couldnt find anything, maybe it was just the exhaust popping. I told them I could guarantee them it wasnt the burble of the exhaust I was hearing. The guy came back on the phone a minute later and said, Oh, one of your exhaust brackets was loose so it just needed tightening up. So I`m not sure what to think. It did it all week, then on the way to the dealer it stopped (of course). So I told them it may or may not do it from them. No biggie, I`m a aircraft mechanic and I can completely understand the whole ghost in the sytem though. If you couldnt replicate it thats fine, just stick to a story. I`m just annoyed that I`m getting two stories.
