New winter footwear

As I mentioned, I brought home my new baby and she needs some winter shoes.

I was ready to order from Tirerack but I decided to check with my local independant dealer. He matched the price for the exact same configuration, except for state tax. For the cost of the tax, $36, I get the tires mounted, demounted, balanced, etc for the life of the product.

It pays to check local before you buy over the internet...

Yep, good deal for you! Remember also, though, that there is value in Tire Rack's information and website that's paid for by folks purchasing through them. Some dealers don't recognize that your purchasing from that local guy may have been influenced by the information given by Tire Rack, and not by something your local dealer did.

Also - be careful - tires aren't necessarily meant to mounted and demounted multpile times... can chew up the bead and puts the wheels at the mercy of the installer (I've had multiple wheels scratched by installers, even careful ones). They'll all likely survive a couple remountings though, but always check your tire pressure a few times afterwards since rim (bead) leaks can happen. I've always gone the route of dedicated snow tires on dedicated wheels - makes the changeout more painless AND keeps the summer wheels out of the salty sushy gritty junk that's on the streets for 5 months.

Congrats on a good deal though. Most dealers don't do that (and some, even if they don't tell you, actually order their tires FROM the Tire Rack!)

Do yopurself a favor if you really need different rubber for the colder months - get a second set of rims. The swap is free (just get a $30 jack and do it yourself - takes less than an hour, barring cleaning the rims and prepping them for storage), and you get that great feeling when you do something youself.

There are lost of great deals out there - in my case, I found a set of 16" rims with All-Seasons (only 2k miles on the tires) for less than $400 shipped. Now I have different rims for my Performance rubber for summer and my All Season rubber in Winter, too - bit of nice variety that way.... I'm finding that lots of people buy the car with OEM rims then swap them for aftermarket ones or different OEM ones and just sell the ones they had on origonally.

Sweet! That really is the best way to go, as opposed to having to re-mount the tires all the time. What rims did you go with?

My local tire dealer orders specialty tires from tire rack and always matches their price. Saves me the hassle of having them shipped to my home.

Although the last 2 times I've bought tires, an online competitor was cheaper and offered cheaper shipping.

AtoZ, that's a great deal - glad you got wheels too. What style/type did you get?
