Is it too late to order an '06 MC/MCS?

What is the difference between a "sunroof" and a "moonroof"?

Is the dual-sunroof an '07 feature only?

 

I believe that the deadline for ordering an '06 has long since passed...I'll defer to other members of NAM, but for some reason I think the deadline was either September or November...I just can't remember which.

Yep. R50/53 hardtop production ended in early November. Your best bet is to contact nearby MINI dealers to see if they still have brand new hardtops in their lots.

However the convertible MCC and MCS will continue to soldier on practically unchanged for the 2007 model year. So if you don't mind losing the tin top and getting a rag top (and a very nice at that) instead, then you can certainly custom order a new '07 convertible.

If you want to order a brand new custom tin top, then your only choice is the R56 MC or MCS all new for '07.

Any answer re: difference between moonroof & sunroof?

 

2002-2006 hardtop MINIs had an optional "Dual" glass electric sunroof that covered 60% of the total roof area and added about 50-60 pounds of weight to the top of the vehicle. It was manufactured by Webasto a German company that manufactures OEM electric roofs among other new vehicle components.

In the old sunroof, only the front panel tilted/slided and the rear panel was fixed.

In the new R56 2007 MC and MCS hardtops, both the front and rear glass panels open and/or tilt.


Sunroof = Glass panel
Moonroof = solid metal panel.

Oh - moonroof is double on both cars, but on the '06 only the front one opens (slides up and over the roof). I believe on the '07's they both open. There are some '06s on dealer lots, call around or ask on NAM.

Moonroof and Sunroof appear to be the same thing.

 

OK here it goes....

A sunroof is an opening in an automobile roof. Sunroofs may be either fixed or operable.
Historically, sunroofs have been opaque and open to the air to allow the sun to shine directly into the vehicle, while moonroofs have generally been transparent or semi-transparent and designed to remain closed while allowing muted light to penetrate the vehicle.

I just wasn't sure if the moonroof was solid metal vs. glass (sunroof).

 

I don't think you can find solid metal roofs in new cars anymore, but I do remember them being the norm 15-20 years ago.

 

What he meant by solid was that you can't see through it (sunroof) vice a transparent (safety glass usually) one (moonroof). At night it's too cold to open the pane, but a clear one allows you to still see the moon (hence moonroof). Most cars now only offer moonroofs with some offering interior panels to cover it if the sun is too bright (wimps!)
