Odd Smell

Yesterday I had a werid problem with my Mini not responding to my shifting (went into gear, but the gear change didnt effect the RPMs) There was an odd burning smell after It did that. I can't really explain the smell. It wasn't a rotten smell, or burning rubber smell. IT was really odd. My car drives fine now, no signs of a bad clutch or anything. However, it still smells odd (not as bad as when it first happend, but still noticable) Do you think my clutch could have burned alittle that night and Im still smelling alittle of it. Or do you think its something wrong with my engine? Im at a total loss right now. I can't take it into the dealer untill after christmas, because of the crazy week I have. So I be over concerned with it right now? The car drives fine no signs of problems accept for the smell.

Sounds like your clutch is dying/slipping and getting its life shortened

To test if it's a slipping clutch, floor it when your going down the highway. If the rpms rise fast, then it's slipping.

Clutch smell is kind of a musty brake pad smell. Sort of like you were dragging your brakes..... over a skunk.

I had a friend who works on cars check it out. He drove it and said the clutch seams fine and checked the engine out. He said everything looks to be fine. He said from what I say that the clutch slipped and I burned it alittle. He told me not to worry unless the clutch pedal is sticking or its tough to put the car into gear.

I went to a Christmas light display a week and a half ago, and spent about an hour slipping the clutch as I crept uphill behind other vehicles. The clutch smell afterwards was terrible, and I thought it was completely fried although it worked fine. Two days later it still was stinking up the garage, but the smell dissipated over time. It seems fine now- only a hint of smell if I really give it the sniff test, so hopefully your situation will resolve itself, too. Clutch replacement could be big $$. Good luck.
