Clo is here in Wicked Wanda. Wanda has 4650 miles and I think it is time to change that oil. What say you? She drove from LA to St. Pete......

Clo needs a LUBE job. I won’t touch that one with a ten foot pole.

I think that after Deal's Gap, Mike and Donna should let MINIClo take Wicked Wanda to their local MINI dealership for an oil change (LUBE job)
What does everyone think

I think I'll take Wanda into Ferman MINI with 2minis for an interim oil change in the morning and perhaps some window-tinting, too! She needs a bit more sharkiness! LOL!

Cheers!

My wife’s '01 BMW X5 didn't get its first oil service until almost 17,000 miles! Ouch. But that was the earliest that the dealer would perform the free service because of the service interval indicator lights were still showing. All her driving consists of 100+ mile long trips, mostly at highway speeds with very few short trips. I guess if the manufacturer is welling to warranty the vehicle for 4 years or 50,000 miles and then extend that to 6 years or 100,000 miles if the vehicle becomes part of their certified pre-owned program they must know what they are doing. I plan to change my oil myself on my MCS at 5,000 miles for peace of mind.

I would like for someone who has changed their oil pre service to see if it has any metal in it. We all know that the synthetic oil will last almost forever but what about engine wear. I don't have too much faith in the filters, not much changed there in years. Or has anyone seen magnets for the filters or magnet oil plugs?

I have a few straps that go arround "normal" oil filter canisters with a few strong raw earth magnets in them... I have cut a filter after using one and it does work... trapping some very very fine particles.... This was on VW and Datsun Race motors ....

My Dad found the straps when getting parts for a small single prop plane he used to have a share in.... I still have one , the other broke....

From my best understanding of oil systems, the oil is passing through the filter at a very high rate when you are driving (I'm not an engineer, but I think it is something along the lines of gallons per minute!) The speed at which the oil flows through the filter leads me to have the opinion that only VERY strong magnets would prove at all useful - and then probably only on a small percentage of the possible particulates. Just my thoughts - no evidence to really back this up.

The magnetic drain plug, on the other hand, might actually help. The particulates will likely settle in the bottom of the oil pan - somewhere near the drain plug - and cling to it. But, again, I would think the magnetism would need to be relatively strong to hold things there.

*shrug*

Just some thoughts.

Clo - Just thought I'd say how fun it is to read about your travels! It's almost like vicariously traveling the country to visit all the MCOers! I know I really enjoy the effort you put into posting here and on your blogspot!

I changed my oil at 2000. Drum roll please! The results of my unscientific, particle check were conclusive for me. Results please. Peace of Mind 100%, observable particles 0%. Plus it was a good opportunity to get a new tool, a 36mm shallow socket!!

Clo,

Hope the lube job goes well at Ferman today. I still have not done mine, but I have topped mine up once.

Glad to hear you are having a great time down there with all my Florida MINI friends!

See ya in Deal's Gap!

Then 2minis and I had a great lunch at a Vietnamese cafe and ran into Tran, who did the window tint on 2's MCS, "Coop!" I asked him to tint Wanda, so she's getting her tints tomorrow afternoon! YAY!!!

Cheers!
