What it means to "Motor"

I saw this on a fellow NAM'ers site. I am sorry to say I don't remember his NAM ID but his name is Taylor Smith. His site (and source of this) is: http://www.taylorsmith.biz/Motoring.htm

I love the term. Love my MINI and love how, indeed, it has changed how I approach life.

Glad you saved this for us Taylor!

What it means to "Motor"

Motoring is the enlightened form of driving. It is about exploration, discovery and exhilaration. MINI is the perfect car for exploration. Motoring in a MINI feels more like riding a motorcycle than driving an SUV. It's about going from A to Z instead of just A to B: taking the long road home, just for the fun of it.

Motoring is all-inclusive - it is genderless, ageless and is not concerned with social status. MINI is a unique car in terms of driving appeal, looks and size, and as such is deserving of its own term for 'going'. In looking for this new word... the invitation to go motoring is 'Let's Motor'. Historically, 'motoring' has British overtones, which calls on the MINI heritage; although it has primarily been chosen as it represents MINI's spirit of action and adventure.

Motoring can be further defined by comparing it to driving. While driving as a term is about cars and the road, Motoring is a unifying religion, a new more enlightened form of driving that takes advice from the backseat and let's people in our lanes. When one drives a MINI, one's outlook on life changes. And so the world becomes a better place.

'Let's Motor' suggests an invitation and a 'Let's Get Going' mentality.

Oh hey now, hey now, hey now...

one can "motor" in any conveyance
but the resonant frequencies differ
lending motoring a different tune
a different timbre
a different tempo
a different song

Motoring is music
motoring with music can be harmonious
or discordant
depending on the motoring
the music
the artist
and the instrument

Motoring is an art
Driving is a job

Practice the art
of motoring

A MINI by any other name would motor as sweet! (Or is that, sweetly?)

DixonL2: Are you the author of the song/poem?

Rest assured, I can go explore places you cannot in your MINI

What this really is is .... really good MINI marketing. You gotta give them kudos for making up stuff like this.

WOW no way. If you don't get the difference between motoring & driving I don't feel like it can't be explained using just words. It's a feeling I get & it's so unrelated to any marketing scheme

Cmon Bama, with all due respect, MINI marketing made the phrase "popular" among the MINIiteratti ... hey thats a new word ... MINIileteratti .... definition: An individual who is knowlegeable about the MINI cult.

I give MINI marketing great marks for selling this stuff (along with "youification"). Unfortuntely, people have been "motoring" long before MINI existed ... and people have youified there cars long before MINI existed.

I used to go "motor" or go for a ride ... just to listen to the exhaust and find the country road ... actually, WE still do. I never use the radio (she does). If you ever read the "What do you listen to while driving" Threads, I always said; "Whine by JCW, exhaust roar by Borla".

And "youification"? Another GREAT MINI marketing success. I truly give Kudos to those guys. But you aint seen an option list until you seen the ordering guide for a Porsche. No disrespect intended but basically, anything you want ... you can have). Want Red Ostrich leather seats with blue leopard inserts ... no problem.

All Im saying is that MINI marketing does a VERY good job, close to the BEST in all of autodum. I applaud them.

So yeah, I know what motoring is but don't need a gimmick or phrase to know what I've been doing all my life.

Do we understand what I'm saying now?

A non-enthusiast would see this as good marketing.

A real enthusiast understands the difference between driving and motoring but enjoys the feeling being put to words too.

Well thanks for the insult

Seems like in this thread https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=86109 you thought an enthusiast was someone who looked back at their car

An enthusiast can't ALSO look back at their car as they walk away ? What... after motoring an enthusiast parks the car and never turns back to take another glance... or three ?

I said that was your input to that thread ... it was you had to say about the definition of an enthusiast.

A car enthusiast will look at ANY car that meets their fancy, not just their own.

Okay... guess I can't make my own definition and agree with another.

Alright, Chows, you're a car enthusiast, I guess. Me... I'm more of a MINI enthusiast. Other cars do catch my eye but I can't think of any other that makes me smile and take a second and third look like the MINI.

Differences of opinions are fine, of course.

Thats COOL Nothing wrong with being a MINI enthusiast.

I got to say maybe I'm a bit more opened minded but there are many cars I look at ... I even drive around a parking lot to view an interesting one ... or sometimes walk to see it in a Mall Parking lot if its interesting. Love looking at Elises ... Now that is ONE cute but awesome looking beast.

Its also OK to look back at your car ... HELLL, I used to get up at 2AM and look out the bedroom window down on the roof of the MINI Seriously.

IMO, a car enthusiasts knows no car maker bounds. I will even give due respect to a good looking Vette even though I would never buy a Chevy!

I have scar tissue on my tongue as a result of reading many of your posts and as a result I have concluded that you may be afflicted with ODD.

You can support Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation by making a tax-deductible donation.

Oppositional defiant disorder

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a theory proposed to explain an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures that goes beyond the bounds of normal childhood behavior.
When a child cannot seem to control his anger or frustration, even over what seems to be trivial or simple to others, the child will often react in violent or negative ways to his own feelings. A physician will commonly refer the child to a psychiatrist who will determine if the child frequently shows four or more of the following behaviors or signs of the disorder for more than six months:
  • Arguing with adults
  • Losing temper
  • Angry or resentful of others
  • Actively defies adults' requests or rules
  • Negative attitude
  • Blames others for his own mistakes or behaviors
  • Seems touchy or easily annoyed by others
  • Deliberately annoys others
  • Acts spitefully or vindictive
Some researchers believe that ODD is symptomatic of other disorders in children such as ADHD, depression, or bipolar disorder. Oppositional defiant disorder may, therefore, be an indication that some underlying disorder exists.

[edit] See alsoI'm pretty certain the disorder can continue thru adulthood. BUT, We gotta love you man.....you're a NAM'er.

ODD? Could be?

I guess I could argue the other side here but I dont think there is another side. I just said it was a marketing phrase. That doesn't mean you can't have lived it without having a catch phrase.

But hmm, I see no "other side" to take here.

Now if you want to talk oil prices in OT. I'm all for it!!

Everybody got your steel toe lugged sole boots on? Cause it appears that it's kick the crap out of Chows day...

Geesh.

As a famous philosopher said after getting the crap kicked out of himself, "Can't we all just get along?"

Chows, the Motoring gods smile upon you. Even if some people have CKEJ (Chow Kicking Enjoyment Disorder).

Double Geesh.

Its OK. These guys were NOT disrespectful (aka the guidelines) in any way. Small insults come and go with opinions. I was kinda kidding about that anyway.

My opinions CAN be the opposite of what others think ... then again their opinions are the opposite of what I think

All is good but thanks!
