What makes the difference...

Between an enthusiast and the average owner/driver?

Just curious how folks separate the two.

In the simplest terms, I consider it the difference between people that enjoy driving just for the sake of driving, and those who think cars are just a means to get from A to B.

Art vs. Appliance.

Well, my personal opinion is that if the car gets you enthused, then you're an enthusiast. If you drive a rwd turbo Miata in the winter, because you dont have another car(all the moneys in the Miata) than you're probabally an enthusiast.

The everyday driver just doesnt know what he is missing.

The average owner/driver never turns around to look at their car as they are walking away from it - for the sole purpose of looking at it.

I think a true enthusiast is open minded about all cars. The type that frequents marque forums and denigrates all other brands of cars is not an enthusiast. My dad was a car guy and now I'm a car guy.

I'm not sure how to answer that in general, but for MINIs... I'd say an "enthusiast" appreciates the MINI as not just a vehicle, but a lifestyle. MINIs/Minis have a great history, a cult following, a place in pop culture, and a unique way of uniting all kinds of people from all over the world. An enthusiast knows this, and it brings him/her just as much joy as actually motoring.

I dont think its that simple.

I agree with MTBscott that an enthusiast is open minded.

You might be a car enthusiast if:
  • You read the online car blogs to find out whats coming out and whats hot
  • You read car forums for cars you don't own because you have an interest in them
  • You learn about the history of classic cars and their heritage
  • For the car you do own ...
    • You learn whatever you can about it, its history, its future
    • You learn how to make it better (in anyway that is important to you
    • You learn the issues with your car
    • You learn the independent shops for service
Note that DIY does not necessarily mean your an enthusiast. It might mean your a good mechanic.

Similiary, dumping a ton of money into a car might make it your hobby, but that doesn't necessarily mean your an enthusiast either.

The average car owner, as Edge says, uses the car SOLELY as an appliance ... a means to an end.

On the other hand, an enthusiast will find the right line on a highway off-ramp.

this just sounds like a poor excuse for someone that isn't an
enthusiast any more cause as I said, you need to motor a
MINI to be an enthusiast.
