%&$*% Door DING!!!

Why can't people just put their shopping cart away when they're done??? I went to Target today to get a few things. I parked far away as usual from other cars. But when I was walking towards my car, there it was, a &%$*#(@ shopping car right against the door . Add to the fact that it's a windy day you can pretty much guarantee a shopping cart will make its way to your car.

At first I didn't notice any damage. But I checked again when I got home. And there it was. A %&$%^# ding. It's not that bad. No crease in the sheet metal and no paint damage. I made a appointment with my dealer to have it looked at.

From what I see it looks like it shouldn't be a problem with the paintless dent repair guy. But I'm worried since the ding is right smack in the middle of the door. I'm afraid the dent can't be pushed out b/c of the door beam. Anybody have pictures of the door with the door panel removed?

Great timing since I'm shopping for presents for my family.

Me--->

Sorry to hear of that.
I went to Walmart last w/e (first and probably last time) and was very impressed how everyone seemed to take their cart back to a proper place, unlike at so many stores.

(ignore the speaker crossover!)

sorry to hear about the ding.

ive done a few MCS's with dings in the door. really depends on
where it is. one time i had a ding lined adjacent to the beam.
i took my thinnest tool and was able to massage it out.

Thanks for the pic. Thank goodness the beam points downward. I think the ding is on the bottom half of the crossover.

Is there space between the door skin and and beam? Or the beam is firmly attached to the door skin. I called my dealership since they know how to take off the door panel. But anybody know any paintless repair places in the NY metro area?

Bummer Some people are just LAZY!!! Can't tell you how many times I've taken other carts back to the cart return OR shot a nasty look at somebody for leaving their cart instead of taking it back. What? It takes a total of maybe 15 extra seconds to put one back???

There is a simple sollution to prevent this from happening in the future. Simply find a carriage return that has no carts in is and back in, then string a rope ascross the front opening so people get the idea this carraige return is full. It provides great procection with the side and rear rails from stray carts

I had a dent in my boot hatch at delivery.

But the dent puller guy 'sucked' it right out. It's a VERY COOL 'technology'. I think it's a variation on a toilet plunger. Talk about 'technology'!

Hope all turns out well on your fix!

PDR is a righteous, miraculous thing! To the ding-er, a pox on ye! To the ding-ee, I wish you luck and a quick repair (and insurance coverage).

A recent hailstorm in Chicago zapped me pretty bad, and PDR (on the insurance company's dime but I consider it more like I pre-paid lol) was the perfect solution. Heck, they removed 2 dings that were there PRE-hailstorm. Guess I had some pretty good karma working .

Straying a bit off topic: The PDR man lent me a car with custom paint, the multi-colored metallic hi-tech expensive stuff. While this funky ride was in my care, an S.A.K (Some Anonymous ****) put a B.O.D. (Big Ol' Dent) in the passenger rear while I was procuring some filo dough at Jewel to make some baklava . So I had the pleasure of filing ANOTHER claim with my friends at State Farm. Everyone was taken care of with speed. I do love H. E.'s (happy endings).

Cheers,
Tatt

ps thanks to Kenchan for helping me understand PDR and get over my initial fright at the whole prospect - it's a wonderful thing - my black roof, as well as every other body panel, is fully restored to its pre-hail gorgeousness.

Though I wouldn't go near my MCS with it, Here's One last gasp Off Topic item, speaking of technology:

It's bad enough lazy people don't put carts away, but here some parkinglots have quite a slope, so when one starts rolling LOOK OUT!

Funny how you posted this today as I just noticed my first door ding on my new not-even-two-month-old MINI today. I was absolutely furious!!! Why can't people be a little more careful! I called my dealer and they do have a guy that can fix dings. There are a few small scratches to the paint though, so I will have to take it in for them to look at and see if it is do-able. Anyone know how much it might be for them to fix it?

In the Los Angeles area, a door ding, depending on size can cost anywhere from $25 to $100 per ding to repair.

This morning I had a similar thing happen. I picked up GP1845 on Tuesday and drove it to work this morning.....a very windy morning. After I parked, a lady pulled in right beside me and opened her door and promptly let the wind yank it out of her hand. I sat there for a split second, thinking I was going to explode, looked over at her and she had no recognition on her face...just kept going about her business. As I walked around the car to look at the possible dent, she just looked at me and said, "The wind caught it." Like that was going to make everything o.k. What an moron! Luckily, no damage or scratch. Some people are just plain stupid!!!

thanks for the kind words, tatts!

octaneguy- LA's parking space is about 3/4th the size of wat we have
here in chi-burbs. im not sure if that equals a good thing or not... cause
if you were to get a ding where i am, the denter's door is usually at full
speed on the arch. BOOM!

atleast in LA the door is hard to open so can't get the full momentum of
the door. so you get a variety of door dings... from your tiny $25 (wat?
there's a ding? ) to a whoppin dent where some fatass pushed
your car across the parking space with their door to get their butt in
their car. $250.

funk- as far as the brace, there is some room at the lip of the brace
but the main part is attached to the door.

Took another look today. But this time from afar. I'm afraid that the ding is right where the door beam is . Soooooo fookin' pi$$ed right now .

But on the other hand, would the area where the door beam is attached to the door skin be strong enough to prevent a ding?

I have a appointment with the dealer on Friday. This is gonna be a looong week. . I was about to get a Dice ipod adapter after Christmas. It looks like that purchase will have to be put off for a while.

^^ don't you have a dentwizard by your place? www.dentwizard.com

they are usually open on Saturdays too. until you take it in you don't know
for sure if it's over the beam or not. even if it is, there's a glue based
puller the tech will try. if that doesn't pull it out, then you'll have to
either eat it or get it repaired at a bodyshop.

check with your insurance too for comprehensive coverage.

Thanks for the link Ken. I entered my zip code and several locations came up. But the thing is, they're all car dealerships. Makes like Nissan, Jaguar and even Aston Martin. No Mini. Under services it says "authorized service outlet" .

So, even though it's a Jaguar dealership, would they service my car?

^^ yes they will (at least they should). also, if you see a dent guy working on a car at
a dealership get their biz card. they can probably do your car afterhours.

Sorry to hear about the dent. Shopping carts are any car's arch enemy. But my beef is usually with the large vans for 14 people who seem strangely drawn to my tiny MC. They JUST can't help themselves when they park so close to me that I can't even get into my car. I actually had to go inside the store last week and have the manager ask over the speaker for the van's owner to go and move it. When the BIG fella stomped outside, cussing me and the manager, I just told him he shouldn't have parked over the line into my space blocking me in. I'm sure that he could have cared less.

I love what they do here in Germany. In order to get a cart, you have to insert 1 Euro (coin) into a slot that will release a lock cable. You use the cart and when you are done you return it to get your coin back. Cuts down on theft and door dings.

Then again, Germans park so close to each other that you have to slide out of your car. However, I have yet to get a door ding.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
