R50/53 How to tell: SS or SS+
How to tell: SS or SS+
I have a 2003 MC. I've actually claimed it as my own from my wife (she can drive my POS acura). She bought it used a while back, and I am curious about if I have SS or SS+. What I can say is that the front barely moves with all of my weight.
Is there a way to tell from the VIN? or maybe the springs on the ss and ss+ are different colors?
Help?

The MINI has two suspension setups...the base Cooper comes with the "Sport Suspension, and the Cooper S comes standard with the "Sports Suspension Plus"...it's a firmer/sportier ride. The SS+ is optional on the MC though.
The Cooper suspension is called the sport suspension...
and the stock S suspension is called the sport suspension+
You can ask the dealer to look it up for you! They will be able to tell with your VIN.
Hope that helps!

To answer the original question....I'm not sure how to check. Do you have the window sticker?
DustinDallas is correct. The MC comes standard with the "Sport Suspension", and the "Sport Suspension Plus" is an optional upgrade. The MCS comes standard with the "Sport Suspension Plus".
Note however... it will get confusing with the 2007 models, because the names are changing.
For 2007 models onwards, the "base" suspension will just be called that - the base or "standard" suspension. The UPGRADED suspension will be called the "sport" suspension. There will be no "sport suspension plus" any more, because the "sport" suspension is already upgraded.
As for the OP's question... have you tried logging in to the MINIUSA Owner's Lounge? I'm not sure, but it might let you look at the car's original specs.

If you have calipers, you can measure the swaybars. Look up the diameters to be sure, but I think the rear on SS+ is 17mm. The Sport Suspension (base) will be less than that.
You can also call up 866- ASK-MINI and they can look it up for you.
