R50/53 17.1 Mpg?
17.1 Mpg?
So I dont know exactly what the mini mileage is, but I know its supposed to be .. what.. mid 20's city and 30+ highway. Well I have a 2005 Mini Cooper S and have a cumulative MPG of 17.1 (according to the onboard computer).
Has anybody else done this poorly? It used to be at 16.8 but I have been trying to drive more conservatively.
Also does anybody know how I could reset this average to start over and try to do a little bit better?

The computer is a ballpark estimate. My computer is pretty close ( +/-3 mpg), but it is still ballpark.
You know the button you push to change what display is on the computer? Put the display on mpg, then push the button and hold it. Display should go to zero and start recalculating. This also works for avg speed.
If you highway drive and hold the revs under 3000--driving it "nicely"--you should get better than 25mpg.
Also, the computer should give you a "range" or miles left on that tank. mpg and range should be related--again, ballpark--better mpg=longer range.

I'd actually signed on to ask what kind of mileage people were finding on their Mini's.
My MINI 2006 has been averaging something like 24.7 for most the time and thats using 93 octane gas. I drive an automatic so I know that takes a bit of efficiency out of my mileage, but am still curious if others find themselves below the 28/36 mpg reported by MINI.

Sell224, how many miles can you go on a tankful? 17.4 seems awfully LOW. I'm getting in the 30mpg ballpark. I can go about 400 miles on a tank - and that's bone dry.
I don't look at the computer - except for the "range" indicator.

but if you drive it like a sports car, it is easy to get 16-18.
be glad it's not worse, many cars with this much performance would kill to b in the 16-18 range.
to reset the OBC, press and hold the display button while on the average screen.
my onboard computer on my 04 MCS has said 25.5 for the past couple fill ups but when I calculate the miles by gallons filled I always get around 22.3 miles per gallon. I have yet reset the MPG on the stalk. First I've heard of resetting it in this thread.
My computer is too optimistic by 2+ mpg on a 2002 MCS with Alta intake, 15% pulley & MTH firmware.
I track mileage on each tank and I typically get ~26 mpg, mixed city+road. On the highway I run 28. Best ever was A tad over 30 when I wasn't pushing it on the highway. In cold winter it drops 1-2 mpg.
The "measured at the pump" number is biased, because repeated tests show that the odometer & speedometer always read long by a few %. It is claimed that the speedo's error in showing speed to be faster than reality is the manufacturer's feeble attempt to enforce compliance with traffic rules
.
But when odometer reads extra mileage by a few %, this means that the warranty expires early, this means that the manufacturer is making money by shaving warranty liability :impatient

My MINI averages between 29 and 32 mpg. I typically get 400 miles per tankful, and as much as 425. I did get as little as 26 mpg and about 350 miles on a tankful when it was in the break in period, it was 100 degrees and the A/C was on the whole time. My OBC usually has me between 31 and 33 mpg, so it seems pretty close.
I don't know what highway people are driving on to keep the tach under 3k, but I guess if you're doing 55mph you'll keep it there and get around 30mpg. From FL to NY and back I averaged around 25mpg, but that's cruising I95 at 80-90mph most the way with A/C on. Gotta remember the MINI isn't exactly aerodynamic, so the faster you go the more you're screwing yourself on the MPG. My daily commute with light in town afternoon traffic and 2/3 highway(75-80mph) miles I get around 27.
These mileage threads drive me absolutely NUTS! It doesn't do any good to provide avg. mpg figures without the corresponding avg. mph. The higher the speed.....the higher the miles per gallon. It's pretty straight forward.
At an average speed of 21.1 mph I got 16.0 mpg.
At an average speed of 22.3 mph I got 16.7 mpg.
At an average speed of 24.0 mph I got 18.5 mpg.
At an average speed of 24.9 mph I got 19.2 mpg.
In the 5.5 months that I have had it, my '06 MCS has averaged 17.1 mpg (18.1 on the computer)) at an average speed of 23.4 mph. This fits nicely into the figures listed above. I probably tend to drive a bit on the hard side.
Without providing average speed......average miles per gallon provides no rational basis for comparison.

I recently moved across country, and for the second half of the trip where the MCSa wasn't on a trailer, I was getting about 32-33 MPG. This is pacing a Penske truck that had a restrictor in place at 70mph. So on the highway, if you can keep your car around 70, you'll get the estimated MPG.
city driving with around 20 mph avg i get around 22 mpg thats keeping it under 3K rpm. highway i get between 26-30 depending on the terrain, going between 70-78 mph, i definitely see a big drop with increase of speed, our minis aren't the most aero dynamic of cars. my OBC is constantly 1.5 mpg optimistic. i haven't heard of pessimistic OBC!? I noticed a increase in mpgs at 8K miles, longer then average break in?
'03 Mini S and I average 25.2 in suburban driving. Usually not bumper to bumper and traffic has a decent flow.
I drive fairly hard for short periods of time (here and there) but the majority of the time I don't push it.

My 47 mile one way commute has me going at speeds between 35 and 80 mph... sometimes more sometimes less. I'm in 6th gear often and sometimes have the cruise on so maybe I get decent mileage due to that... Every night on my way home though there's the Bear Mt Hill uphill grade on which I usually pass everyone so I know I can't be all that economical at that point... wandering thoughts....
Are you guys getting less MPG now that our fuel contains "up to 10% ethanol"? I'm driving a 95 Volvo 850 wagon (impatiently awaiting the delivery of my M.C.S.). I've always gotten 21 MPG till this summer. Now it's dropped to 19 or 19+. I have a 5-speed manual. Grrrrrr,,,, really pisses off this vintage driver.
yeah that ethanol really is a killer on the gas millage! i hate you ethanol, haha!

17.1 MPG averaging 15.5 MPH was worst.
34.3 MPG averaging 64.8 MPH was best.

I'll be doing more calcs later. 2003 MSC JCW
