Extended Warranty!

When I purchased my 02 Mini, I purchased the extended warranty for it too . Has anyone else purchased the warranty, or am I the only i&!@t that purchased the extended warranty ? I purchased my Mini used and I have about 49K on the odometer. Has anyone with the same amount or more miles on their Mini experienced any problems (if any)? I want to add some M7 upgrades; however, I do not want to sacrifice my warranty if other owners have had repetitive problems.

5/50 really might not be a bad idea, especially if you plan to keep your Mini at least that long. And if you autocross, could be a REALLY good idea.

I have a 2005 MCS and now you have me somewhat concerned.. what kind of problems did you find with your MINI?

Don't be concerned. Cars have problems, some more than others. I have 50K miles on my '05 without a single problem.

Warranty

I have 50K on my 2003 MCS, and it's been in the shop every 6 months for repairs. It's had over 50 things fixed. I've really had to sit on them to make sure stuff got done. Squaky wheel gets the grease. If the previous owner was tough on the dealer, then the car might be ok, but if an idiot didn't get the stuff fixed under warranty, then you might be in for problems later.

Off warranty, my repairs would have been in the thousands! Remember that MINI BMW technician are not encouraged to find problems to fix in ouir MINIs.

with all these problems, its a wonder how all these sellers of used MINIs say their car is problem free...

mods may jeopardize your warranty.

Trouble-Free MINIs?

Owners who think MINIs are trouble free haven't owned them long enough! I get sick of hearing 06 owners saying how trouble free their cars are!

BMWs are known for lock and window motor issues. I love my MINI, but I am realistic that they are known to Consure Reports and JD Power to have relaibility and quality problems.

And to the extent that dealerships can avoid making the repairs - by overlooking warranty repairs, not informing owners of problems, they saved money on covered repairs and actually make money once it's off warranty!
It's a business for them and they have it all calculated. Be skeptical.

Why would a dealership pass on an opportunity to do a warranty repair over the possible future opportunity to do the same repair out of warranty? Sure, they are paid less for the repair under warranty, but if there is 30,000 (or, worse yet - 40,000) miles remaining on the factory warranty, it is not like they will get the additional repair revenue any time soon. The dealer I go to has a reader that they insert the car's key into that apparently grabs the VIN and checks for outstanding service campaigns on the car. If there is an outstanding service campaign, they do it.

I wonder about the viability of avoiding identification of warranty repairs to be able to do the same repair out of warranty - there is no guarantee that they will get the job. An out of warranty repair could be sent off to an independent service shop and then the dealer is out 100% of the revenue from the repair....

Warranty

My dealer told me that if I extend my 3yr to 4yrs, getting my brake job which includes rotors and calipers will be covered and that alone is about an $1100 job so the $700 warranty is well spent. Also tell them your door locks froze up over the winter and they will replace them with "better" designed ones for free (another $450 per side). Daz

I think there is a confusion between the free Maintenance program 36 months/36,000 miles and the Warranty 48 months/48,000 miles. The brakes are a wear item and would be covered by the Maintenance program.

Separately, how do they get away with charging $1,100 for brakes? Are all four corners going out? Typically, the fronts go out first. Have you been given data on the remaining wear? It really sounds like you are being "sold" an extension to the factory maintenance program.... Is the extension a factory program which should be honored at all MINI dealers? Or, is it a program with the dealer you are doing business with (and by extension, is honored only at that dealer)?

Warranty Claim Ceiling

I know a woman who used to work in BMW service and she told me about the maximum warranty amount (warranty ceiling) that the dealer has per month and I believe her. That's the reason they don't go looking for repairs when they're doing other repair work.

Example: had my rear brakes done by MINI and my muffler was hanging because the brackets had rusted. You'd think they would have seen that when the back wheels were off??? I had 10 other repairs that day. Bottom line: you gotta know what's wrong with your car and look out for yourself.
