I'm hearing a Snapple Top Pop Pop (a problem, not a rhyme)

I've aquired a new noise. It seems to only happen when I'm in 1st or 2nd gear.

I accelerate in first and hear a popping noise from the front right. The noise is outside of the car.
Then I step on the clutch and hear another pop. Then as I shift into 2nd and let off the clutch I hear another pop.

I did another little test. I got up to about 3500rpm in 2nd and dance on the accelerator. Sure enough, the minute I hit the gas there was a pop and the minute I let off the gas there was a pop.

To give you an idea, it sounds the same as if you were to take the top of a Snapple cap, put it on a table, and press the top little button. Kind of that click-pop noise.

Is this something I should be worried about? Are there things I can check? I'm getting ready to head to the Dragon in a day and I would hate to make that long of a trip if there is something wrong.

Thanks so much for you help!

If I were you, I'd check the passenger side motor mount. Sounds like it is
loose or going bad.

It could be the motor "rocking." Like what pete said. Also, there was a scenario like this where the brake caliper was loose. Check the caliper, and the motor mount. Then, if you cant find the problem, I'd go to the dealer. 2005 MCS, you still have the factory warranty.

Update:

Contacted dealer and have an appointment at 2:00pm CST. Sounded like he knew exactly what it was, but didn't give mention.

So glad I only live 10min away from a dealer. I'll update again and post what they say when I get back.

Update x2:

Just got back from the dealer. I will never doubt Pete again.

It was the motor mount which was leaking/broken/faulty. They replaced that and the alternator belt which had been leaked on.

Huzzah for warranties!

Thanks for your help everyone!

This "Snapple top pop" noise...is it markedly different than the burble or whatever that is supposed to happen, because I just got my car and hear something from inside, but it sounds like that MP3 that miniusa.com has on the JCW Tuning Kit page.

Maybe I don't have the same noise... Mine is a constant click, click, click as I'm moving. Could it be a CV shaft? It's only audible when I'm driving next to something cause the sound bounces back towards the car. Other than that, I can't hear it.

The sound it was making was not constant. It was almost as if I had something loose in the glove box that could roll around. So when I stepped on the brakes, it would pop. When I trounced on the gas, it would pop again.

It makes sense when you think my motor mount was shot because of the engine going back and forth.

I mentioned to the tech the idea of either a motor mount or a right front half-axel... and he mentioned that usually with the half-axel it is more of a constant noise, so Want-a-mini, I would mark that down as a possibility. (unless you have a nail/stone in your tread). Also keep in mind quertmoneky's idea of the loose caliper. From what I know (which isn't much), clicking from a CV is usually pronounced when you are turning, does it get louder when you turn?

bglct99, if that noise you hear is like a "gurble-pooh-pooh-tink-pooh-pooh-pah" as you let off the gas, it is very normal, especially on >=05s. for me it's a very welcomed noise.
