I've driven Porsche Cayman S today and........what an amazing car this is! It has a 3.4 L mid-engine, which produces 295 bhp and 340 Nm of torque. It accelarates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 s This car just begs you to drive it near the red line. And the sound of a flat 6 engine is phenomenal

The car was equipped with optional PASM (Porsche active suspension management, 10 mm lowered variable suspension system) and Sport chrono package (even more direct and responsive drive). Cayman S drives through corners like it was on rails (or glued to the ground).

But....what I want to say is when I got back in my MCS, MINI felt just as sporty and special as Porsche did. They are two very different cars, but each of them has it's own special energy. MINI really is an amazing car and Porsche is of course still Porsche

The Cayman S has a V-6 engine?

The Cayman looks terrific but I still want a 911.

It probably has a Flat 6 boxer engine.

I too believe it is a flat six.

But what a fantastic and beautiful car. When I first saw the photos, I wasn't impressed. Later on, I dropped by my friendly neighborhood Porsche dealer (don't we all have one of these??!!) and I needed a drool bucket to protect both my shirt and the Porker's paint job. Better than the 911 and more beautiful to boot.

Did they have an "arrest me red" one?

It is a super looking car. I also like the Boxter and would love a convertible.

Some people say it wouldn't be fun to be rich.
They are wrong.

The Porsche is fantastic car, but I don't miss my 911 one tic of the tach. I actually enjoy my MCS more. One day I may own another, but for now I really can't see owning anything other a MINI. The MINI is a very well built machine for reasonable price.

Sorry to correct you but that information is not correct

06 Boxster S has a 3.2 litre engine
06 Cayman S has a 3.4 litre engine

Totally different beasts.

Cayman is dry sump, Boxster is not
Cayman has variocam exactly like the 997s, Boxster has the older version of the variocams.

Cayman engine is detuned because they are faster around the Ring by up to 4 seconds than the base 997 and within a few seconds of the 997S.

It has also been named the 2006 World Performance Car

Rumour mill is the 07 Boxster S will get the same engine with a huge price increase and engine HP higher pushing the 997s up in HP.

Some of the word around the Porsche forums is that it is so fast around the track, Porsche did not place it correctly and had to detune it. Whats the point of paying $20K more for a 997? (except for a few tics faster 0 - 60).

cayman S = my next car if I ever run into some more money, decide not to have a wife and kids, or decide that teaching isn't for me anymore

The stupid part is that I've been to porsche.com to build one, and I started rationalizing the monthly payment. stupidstupidstupid.

although i admire and respect your knowledge of the diff between the porsche boxster and cayman engine differences (personally im a huge porsche fan, and to me is still the ultimate car, but of course the mini is still a very cool car in its own right) but he did not say it has a a flat six BOXSTER engine, he said a flat six BOXER engine, big difference, since boxer is just a variation of the term flat for a motor, so he esssentially really said it has a flat 6 flat engine, though with the close spelling of BOXSTER to BOXER he very well meant boxster and just spelt it incorrectly

Boy, I've only had my MINI a few days, and never had the privilege of owning a Porsche, but I would love to know how someone that can afford both would prefer the MINI. I did sit in one for a while at the Chicago auto show, and it seems like an amazing car. Lookswise, I prefer it to the 911.

From the person posting that has owned both, why do you prefer the MINI -- too much work, too expensive? As good of a car as the MINI is, I can't imagine preferring it to a Porsche.

I stand corrected! Thank you. When you read quickly, your mind just thinks a typo which isnt there. yes, Boxer is just a flat six. There is a pretty big difference in the engines between cars though because I believe "they" think they cant get much more out of the 3.2 or not worth the engineering effort to do so.

MBCOOPS, I've done that too. You just got to figure out how to get rid of the mortgage, kids, wife, and sell away your life ... torture. well, in another life time

911 GT3 for me!
115hp/L??? Hell yeah! Plus it has only what you need, no fancy-shmancy all wheel drive! Just go to the website and watch the track video and listen to that engine wail!

I'd take one in white, oh, and a house with a racetrack all around it, and Heidi Klum as my... well. I think we all get the idea from there.

In any case, they are damn fine automobiles. I'd certainly drive one... then again, a Z06 has 500hp and is almost half as much $$$ ... hmmm?

Hope you got a spare $115K or so lying around

Z06 is a fine auto. Just kind of big but by far the best bang for the buck.

I am in the minority.. I think the Cayman is butt ugly and the long front overhang doesn't help much.

But then again, I have never been a Porsche fan.

Sure the 911 GT3 and some of the other top end Porsches are SOME cars, but why does someone need that kind of power and where can you enjoy that on a daily basis? For the track, great! Up until last fall I owned several Porsches over the past 20 years and found them enjoyable to drive. Porsche has a great petigree and racing history to its name. A great statement car if you're into making a statement or to have one up on the Jones'. My experience with SOME but not ALL Porsche owners was that most were owners, not drivers. There is a difference. I think what I have experienced thus far with other MINI enthusiast is they are all drivers, not owners.

I am VERY happy with my new MINI. I get more smiles and compliments from people with my MINI than I ever did with the Porsche. The MINI is quite affordable and by that I mean not only to purchase, but to maintain and insure. You get a lot of car for the money. I can drive it year 'round in Wisconsin without the cost of storing and lusting to drive it when you get those few nice winter days when you wish you could play with your car. The theft rate is lower on the MINI, too.

So there you have my take of being a once Porsche enthusiast with a MINI.

Thank you for the first part, just wanted to write that. And no I did not mean to write BOXSTER FYA. If you want to know why I wrote V6 in my first post, here is your answer. In my country we call cylinders "valji". And term V is abbreviation of word "valji". If the engine block is in V shape, than we say that a car has V6 engine in V configuration. And I was just literally translating from my language, hence writing bug.

Now you guys try to write something in any of European languages lol

And BTW in Cayman S booklet it says....flat six 'boxer' engine. And with all the respect, but I think that I might know a bit more about Porsches than you do...Well but I am not going to say that, because I don't want to insult anyone.

Well the bottom line is that MINI feels and drives great and that is what this forum is all about

And once again I really like this forum and really love to chat with everybody.

Wish you all a nice day

No they only had two Cayman S's and both were in silver with black interior. I also sat in Boxster and interior is exactly the same as in Cayman (well except there is nothing behind the seats in Boxster because it is covertible).

But I have to say that MCS is maybe a bit easier to drive and I prefer MCS's gearbox

I was looking forward to the debut of the Cayman S. I saw all the pics online, read all the reviews, and then one passed me on a road by my house. I thought it looked pretty crappy. The silver trim in the front to distinguish it from the Boxster makes it looks VW New Beetle to me.

Now don't get me wrong, I am a Porsche fan (parents have a euro spec 3.2 Carerra cab that only goes out nice days), but the looks just didn't do it for me like I thought they would. I bet it is awful nice to drive though.

The only back to back comparo I had with my old MCS and a dream car was an e39 M5. I hopped into my MCS after a 200 mile drive of the M5 the MCS just felt great, much more fun and much easier to drive quickly. I don't think you can beat lightweight for fun.

If you don't believe this, just ask someone that does body repair/restoration work. There isn't much on the inside of the doors or other areas of a Boxster.

The best thing about the cayman S is that in 15 years when im looking to buy a higher end sports car...the caymen will be affordable. After seeing one, a friend of mine commented "In 10 years that will be the working man's Porsche".

Totally agree.

I've owned four Porsches in the past (two purchased used, two purchased new) and don't feel short-changed driving around in my MCS. If money were no object, I might buy another Porsche, and the Cayman S lucks mighty tempting. But having been there and done that, the Porsche-owning experience has lost some of its allure.
