R50/53 Dilemma--Build date Nov 02 or wait four months?
Hello All,
I've been on a waiting list for an S since last July 2nd. I'm not scheduled to even order my car for another 2-3 months. (I'm waiting for MSRP) A week or so ago, an S became available that I got first right of refusal on. The car was displayed at the LA Auto show and is currently having Lapis Blue seats replaced because they got torn up from all the people sitting in them. The car is new, though--0 miles. I have not seen it yet. It is the right color and package combo, but I am a little hesitant. Two questions--has anyone had lapis seats replaced and has that process presented unforeseen problems? And two, were all the niggling quality issues cured by Nov 02, (its build date) or should I just wait another three months expecting that any quality issues will be corrected by then?
As you can imagine, I want one REALLY bad right now! Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Craig

I had a great time waiting, although from the looks of things here, my wait was nominal (about 8-10 weeks or so).
The wait made the delivery day SO nice. I was like a kid at Christmas going to pick up my car...
Hard to say, faced with immediate gratification of waiting, I'll be a hypocrite and suggest that you wait, even if I wouldn't have the stones to wait myself.
Does that help?

I ordered my CR/W last July and am going to pick it up tomorrow am. Yipee!!! For me, getting exactly what you want is worth the wait. Plus the time goes by fast. And during the wait, the forms of Minicooperonline.com helped prepare me for the anticipated arrival of my new baby. If not for this site, I am sure I would not have opted for the HK, or Antricite, or Sports Plus or, Cassette head unit to pair with the Alpine CHA s634, or even know about the CHA-s634 MP3 changer.

Hi Craig,
I talked to a MINI rep at the Chicago Auto Show and she said the car show vehicles just get trashed. They even had one (I think it was at the LA show) that had the antenna stolen from the roof in a manner that left the roof sheet metal dented and deformed. She spoke of torn seats and door panels, broken ***** and handles, belt buckle scratches in the paint, etc.
Perhaps they'd do a bang-up job detailing it and replacing worn/damaged parts; but that's not my idea of a new car. Are they offering a significant discount?
Also, I think I would forever question my decision any time something broke or went wrong with the car. I would wonder if it had anything to do with the cars history, and if I'd made a poor decision.
You've waited this long. Hang in there with the rest of patient future owners and get what you truly want...... a brand-spankin-new MINI!
Good luck.
Cheers,
James

Good point, James. I'd wait.

Wow, James, that's harsh! Especially the stuff about the LA Auto Show car--particularly since it sounds like that car is the car I'm thinking about! This thread has given me serious pause about taking this car.
Does anybody know of a relatively short waiting time for a dealer that sells at MSRP? Anywhere in America?
Thanks again for all your insights,
Craig

We got on the list at East Bay in NorCal in mid-February 03 and were told to expect an August 03 delivery - MSRP for MC. Don't know what the MCS wait is though...our local dealer (Niello in Sacramento) charges $1K over MSRP and told us that we would have a July delivery...so one month earlier is not enough to justify the $1K to us. I do know that Niello has lots of MCs and MCSs in stock for immediate delivery and an online inventory you can check out - but you won't get around that $1K markup (they offered us $800 but East Bay is only a little more than an hour drive so it still didn't make sense). Good Luck...that MSRP-thing is hard to find (only 1 of 5 in NorCal do it)

Craig,
I ordered my MCS in mid Dec from Momentum MINI in Houston. I paid MSRP and received no hassle about dealer upgrades. The car was at the dealership 59 days after I placed my order. My S is fairly plain so it didn't get held up waiting for any of the hard to get options.
I'm not sure they can still get a car that quickly, but give Greg a call and see what he can do. I'd highly recommend Momentum.

Roadshow in Memphis is where I just picked mine up a little over a week ago. They have only about a 6-8 week wait as of right now. They, like many dealers, have cars allocated to be built waiting to be spec'd out by a buyer in the way that he/she would like it. I would highly recommend them. They charge only $150 etching fee over MSRP. You could be in your new car by mid-May and have the break-in done by the time you drive home.
