Crispin Porter did a tremendous job rolling out the MINI. They've been justly rewarded for their efforts (they've snapped up boat-loads of advertising trophies), and I'd expect to see more car companies copy their example.
This is one of the things I like most about the MINI. It's not just a car, it's a culture. In how many other cars will you get a wave from somebody just because they are driving a similar car? Honda? VW? Subaru? Sure.
How many other new cars generate so much affection and comradery?
How many other new cars BEG to be named like ours does? I pulled up to the drive-thru window today and the kid just said, "Wow, what kind of car is THAT?" I replied that is was my 'Mr. Mini'. How flippin' corny is THAT?
Their marketing is so spot-on that the minute I saw it and drove one, there was no question but that I was going to have one (and my other options were pretty cool cars: Jag X-Type, Subaru WRX, Audi TT, Nissan 350Z).
Mini just gets how fun it is to drive a 'fun-to-drive' car.

The picture with the Mini on top of the Excursion is awesome.
The one that says "Parking, so sad" is also very good.
The Mexican ad campaign works around a theme "love or addiction". I have a postcard with a red mini at the gas station with the gas hose connected to the car forming a heart.

Don't get me wrong, I love the MINI(my Fiancee and I have one on order), but other cars do generate some of the same comradery. I drive an S2000, and we have a great community of owners. I think that a great deal of the sense of community comes from the exclusivity of small production run cars. 20K a year is not that many cars, (S2000's are running at about 10K a year in the US) and I think the people who buy the MINI feel more like a family because there aren't a million of them on the road, like the mustang, or the accord, or any of the other mega mass produced cars.

Harley did the same thing with their comeback starting in the early 90's....now they are everywhere and with everyone and have lost their cultness, but Harley has been a great short though which isn't all bad when the cult crashes, laugh!
There's apparently a very charming ad in the Pgh Press.... a MINI facing forward with the captions, in MINI font: "How long is the wait? How long til you get here?" or something similar. Like a lost puppy.... I'd like to take another one home!
I have a Mini on order and I currently drive a Miata. I agree that there is a natural kinship between the Miata and the Mini. Both cars are non-British versions of British classics - only these run.
But here's a question based on something I've been noticing.
I come from an affection for the Mini that is part of my affection for British sports cars from the 60s in general. I have also noticed that there are a fair number of previous BMW owners and fans on here. I also suspect that there are a fair number of people who have just been swept off their feet by the Mini this time around?

teldon, I think you pretty much got it. There are all sorts of folk here that love the MINI for different reasons. But don't worry (if you were worried), there are certainly some others here that share your affection for the classic British sports cars!

Indeed, AirWolf, there certainly are a fair number of marques out there that breed this kind of brotherhood. I guess I am a little extra giddy because this is the first car in that category that I have driven. This is easily my first 'FUN' car.
I think I was trying to say that you can spend $22k and get a good performing car, but it doesn't necessarily buy you the same kind of experience you get with a MINI.
