Questions about paint

I just picked up my astro black mcs on 3/17/06 and just noticed that when I open
the front doors I can see that the inside edge of the front fenders are not painted
black. They do have what appears to be a gold primer paint on the inside edge.
Is this common? I am guessing that what I am calling gold primer provides
protection from rust but I am not sure.

Thanks for any advice

How can you see the inside edge of a fender?

The inner surface, like when you open the boot up top on the body, dont have clearcoat. Is this what you mean?

Well, when I open up the driver or passenger door the area behind the front fender is
visable(just a few inches). Since I have a black car the contrast between black and gold is striking. I noticed the same thing on one of AB convertables at the dealer.

I can see the inside edge of the fender when the doors are open and I am
sitting in the drivers or passengers seat.

It definately a gold colored primer or something not just astroblack without a clear coat

Hmm, sounds like it could be cosmolene (not sure on the spelling but its a protectant goop they spread over everything that has a goldy color). Rub it and try to see if its a layer over the paint or the paint is actually not there..

You're right! I just went and checked mine, and sure 'nuff, bare primer!
I'm feeling much better for having paid $450 extra for metallic paint.
Ok, that was sarcasm.
Chows, with the door open to the second detent, the back edge of the fender is clearly visible in the gap between door and hinge pillar.

This is very interesting. I am going to check my Astro Black. I think that area of the body is hand sprayed. Maybe there is a problem at the factory.

I looked under my door this morning and more of the same thing, just bare primer.
I am guessing the primer has the rust inhibitors, if that is the case I am not going to lose any sleep over it. I also looked at my friends 05 mcs hyper blue and it had a light
coating of HB under the door although you could see the primer through parts of the
paint. Now I am more interested in the paint process they use.
