Huge door ding! Have to Vent

I was buying a book for my Mother's birthday today at lunch. As I am walking out, the woman in front of me in line parked next to me, noticably close, so I peek at my pass. door. THERE IS A FREAKING 2 FT LONG DOOR DING!! from the door handle to just above the rocker! <sudden urge to kill> The lady has pulled away and driving across the parking lot. I jump in the car and chase her down, horns a honking ..lights a flashing. I point at the door and she says "Oh yeah, I did that." At that point I was incredably pissed that she did it AND THEN DROVE AWAY! I asked her why she drove away, she said she was late for a meeting. Then she goes on to say that it is a black car and you will never notice it! <urge to kill growing> So I took her name and had her call her insurance company right there on the spot and set up the claim.

The icing on the cake... I was heading back to my car and she spouts out "y'know if you don't want door dings, don't park in parking lots." <urge to kill taking over body>

Ug, I feel for you - had several similar things happen, one where the other people were tourists and didn't speak english. My damage on the car I had at the time was not bad though, but it is infuriating nonetheless. (Another incident was an old man who 'parked by feel' into may car even though I was standing right there gesturing and yelling, I think he would have run right over me and not noticed - some people just should not drive )

By the way, in your case it is considered a hit and run and it might be worthwhile to fill out a police report with her lic plate and description of what happened to support your insurance claim.

At which point I would've kicked her door in and replied: "If you don't want large dents you shouldn't talk smack!" Well, not really, but don't you wish you could?

Urgggggggg!! Some people!!! I'm sorry.... At least you DID manage to catch up to her and get her info. and all that. If you were a minute later, you would have never known who the culprit was...

I'm sure it will be good as new soon....

You know, she has a point.

If your really don't want a door ding, don't park in a public parking lot because its just a matter of time before someone does it.

You probably don't want to hear it but it is true.

Now you can go scream somemore

Okay, take a big breath in and exhale slowly...you at least found her and was able to get her to call her insurance company. Most of us don't have that luxury...you are one of the lucky few and you did what I wish I could have done on many ocassions. Unfortunately, drivers of bigger/more expensive/ or junker cars don't see it that way. I am glad that you were able to get it resolved...hopefully the insurance company will follow through. Mick

I hope everything gets fixed as new again. Body repair may look bad while you have it, but is superficial. Bending the frame is something different.

I feel for you having to go through the repair process.

She does not have a point. That is not a point, that is an lame excuse. (But I know you are right).

This is exactly what pisses me off, she feels that I should expect to have some ******* damage my car, because they are a moron.

I normally park wayyyyy out there and some a-hole ALWAYS park right next to me, I think just to **** me off. Sometimes it is nice, another enthusist will park there nice car next to mine, they know I'll respect their property.

door dings are bad enough without the dinger having that sort of attitude. Sorry about your ding but my primary thought after reading your post was THE WOMAN SHOULD BE EXILED TO THE LAND OF UNREPETENT CREEPS where they could all be abusive to each other until the final fight to death for the last of their only means of substanance, haggus and stale Old Style beer.

I avoid parking near other cars for that reason, but parking in a legal parking spot should hardly be construed as an invitation for some idiot to hit his car. She's a jerk who can't take responsibility for her own careless behavior. Being late for a meeting is not an excuse for damaging someone else's property. She thinks no one in the world matters except her.

I'd file a police report, too, and do everything I could to stick it to her to the maximum allowed by law.

Mark

I'm trying to be realistic here. It happens. It doesn't make her right ... only rude and inconsiderate ... prolly didnt care.

As for parking far away ... my wife did that yesterday, parked in the boonies of the mall, came out and next to her was a brand, new Cayman ... cool

ARRGG! Poster child for retroactive abortion.
While it might be worthwhile to file a hit-and-run report, I suspect that you will hear the following phrase: "it happened on private property, so we don't care".
Oh, a dent from door handle to rocker is hardly a door ding. Sounds like she flung her door open full force without regard for where it ended up.

Yeah, that can vary by area. As I recall they will let you go to the station and file a report, which your insurance can use - whether they pursue the person for hit and run depends.

Doenst hit and run mean the car was moving?

Alls I know is that someone I worked with witnessed a car get damaged by another, wrote down the plate, and the car owner filed a report with the police and the person who damaged the car and fled w/o leaving info got in hot water with law enforcement - hit and run may not be the correct legal term but there was a penalty of some kind. Also, when my parked car was damaged and I called my insurance they deemed it a hit and run and covered it as that (I don't know if that is universal or not, its just what it was called).

I'm not feeling too well or I'd investigate the codes to pin it down, but I'm sure its all spelled out on your state's DMV site in the vehicle codes...

Hit and run law defines this crime as failure to stop after a vehicle accident to exchange information (name, license number, and other pertinent information) with other involved parties http://www.onlinelawyersource.com/cr...d_run/law.html
But what is an accident?

§ 20-102. Driver to remain at scene - Accidents resulting in bodily injury or death.
(a) The driver of each vehicle involved in an accident that results in bodily injury to or death of another person immediately shall stop the vehicle as close as possible to the scene of the accident, without obstructing traffic more than necessary. http://www.deadlyroads.com/laws/mary...run-laws.shtml

I still think the car has to be moving. If someone hit your car with a bat and dinged it, its vandalism, not hit and run.

Any lawyer out there?

i had a "hit and run" UM claim for my old miata. Except it was my passenger front fender, wheel well, and door that got bashed in... over a grand worth of damage, and i didn't have a name. It happened while i was at work one day, and i did a little homework on who was in and out that day, and the only person logged being in the building other than coworkers at the time of incident was a client of my attorney's, so i was stuck pretty much fixing it myself.

It was a hit and run because the other car HIT you and RAN, yes? Sorry to hear about the damage, but also speaking from experience, it's good you were able to track the person down and go under THEIR insurance policy, and not your own.
