I've actually been having a hard time finding out what the sales tax is on automobiles. I live in Vegas, and the sales tax and automotive taxes are the same at about 7.75%. HOWEVER, back in South Dakota where my family is (and where I'm originally from), the sales tax is around 6% and automotive sales tax is 3%.
SO, I'm wondering for all of those who recently purchased a Mini what your automotive sales tax was.
Here in Alabama they have to make things more difficult. It is 2% to the state, .375% to the county I live in, & 1% to the city I live in. Regular sales tax is 8% in my area, auto sales tax is 3.375%.
Although I haven't actually purchased my MINI yet, I know that where I live in Tacoma (Washington)...the total tax rate for the purchase of a car is 9.1%.
ZERO sales tax baby! And $2,000 off MSRP on spec-to-order new MINIs. I did have to wait about 6 months, but partly that was my choice as I didn't want to take delivery during the winter months. Order date was Oct '04, delivery Apr '05.

Bought in CO and paid nor tax.
Since AK has no state tax I was not charged for the CO state tax
Kinda makes up for having no dealership to take my MINI to.
Cheers

Sales tax varies from state to state and even county to county in California. When I purchase a car, I figure in an additional 10% for tax and DMV fees.
But since I traded in my Miata, I was only taxed on the purchase price minus the trade-in. That saved me a couple of hundred bucks.
I'm trying to determine exactly how that works...what I mean is, when you are taxed on the difference of your trade and the new purchase. For example, when my 06' MCS comes in and I buy it at MSRP for $25,550, if I trade my 05' MC for say $17,500, would I only pay tax on the $8,050? If so, is it complicated by the fact that I still owe a balance on my MC?
If anyone knows the details of this, please let me know
I think I may have answered my question on a credit union website which said, "Currently California, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland and Michigan allow no deductions for trade-ins when calculating sales tax. In addition, Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no sales tax on autos."
So you're up a creek if you live in CA, D.C., HI, MD and MI. That would be another reason to order a vehicle out of state...say in Ohio. Would have saved me about $1,400 when I pick up my MCS in May.
