I believe you will be charged sales tax based on where you live not where you purchase. That's one bad thing about buying a car out of state...you can't finance the sales tax, you must cough it up it when you register the car

I bought my car in OH. When I register it here in MD I will have to pay the 5% excise tax. No getting around this rule. If it was that easy, tax-free states like OR and NH or Indian reservations would do a booming car business!

I bought two cars, including my Cooper S out of state and the tax was included in the financing.

Maybe it's b/c I got it at a neighboring state.

Read this Maryland Crap!!!!!

I bought my 03 MCS 3 years ago in Virginia when I was living in Virginia and paid the 3% Virginia sales tax when I bought it.

I have just recently moved to Maryland whose sales tax is 5%. Within the past few months I went to the MVA registered my 03 MCS which was purchased in Va 3 years ago.

Look at this list of stuff I had to pay for, and please tell me if this is normal.

1) 100.00 for new registration.
2) 23.00 to get the Lien/title transfered from my bank to Maryland
3) 20.00 for a handling fee of the Lien/Title
4) 85.00 for a safety inspection

Sidenote:
4) 45.00 for my license
5) 45.00 for my motorcycle license

Back to the subject:
6) the part that PISSES me of the most I HAD TO PAY THE 2% DIFFERENCE IN SALES FROM VA TO MD ON THE ORIGINAL PRICE OF MY 03 MCS THAT I BOUGHT 3 YEARS AGO, IN VA.

It's not like if I leave MD they will give me my 2% back

I think I ended up spending close to 800 at the MVA that day

Tax

tax is usually coupled to registration/title.

if you buy in state A but register in state B; in my experience if you show B that you paid an equiv tax to A, they waive payment. But if your sales document says to paid no or less tax, they will hit you then for all or the dif'.

I've bought out of state many times, and that's the way it worked each time. Note, B was always the same.....

I bought mine in GA & live in AL. I don't know how I could have financed it because GA can't collect sales tax for AL so I wasn't able to finance my tax

I think the Tax difference thing is total BS. Just in general. I would understand If I bought the car in another state and immediatly transfered it, but, i don't know? I mean it has been registered in VA for the past 3 years. I just think it's crap.

But on a good note. I guess? I won't have to pay a yearly property tax.I've always lived in Va, up until recently and I have never understood the property tax thing. Paying property tax (ownership tax) a yearly state tax on something you already own and paid a state tax on when you bought it.

What the hell is that all about?:impatient

I'll be paying 9% when all is said and done - Chicago, IL. Regardless of where you purchase it, you pay based on where you live. Sucks.

When my sister moved back to KY after graduate school in VA, she had to do the same with her 10 year old POS truck. When she sarcastically asked the DMV if she had paid more in another state, would they reimburse her, their answer was "well, no ma'am. That wouldn't make any sense." How can you try to logic with the illogical

...and KY also has a property tax on vehicles, so she didn't even get out of that

Property tax is paid to keep your public schools going

So if I bought the car from Oregon, why the heck do I need to pay sales tax in Nevada? Nevada has nothing to do with the sale of the car. I can understand registration and licensing taxes, but I don't understand the sales tax! It just sucks because I can either pay $2100 in sales tax here, or $0 in Oregon. That's one big damn chunk!

You pay sales tax to the state in which you reside or register the car.

You live in Nevada, that is where you will pay the sales Tax.

I'm buying my MINI out of state, so when I bring it back, I'll have to pay a "vehilcle license tax." According to the state's website, the "vehicle license tax (VLT) is assessed in place of a personal property tax charged by other states. The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price..." That will be a lot less than the sales tax on the full price of the car, and there's no city/county sales taxes!

I bought my car in OH but I live in MD. I wanted to finance the whole amount. What I did was have the dealer write up the PO to include everything, including a charge for MD 5% excise tax. I wrote the sight draft for the whole amount, and once it clears the dealer will send me a check for the 5% I have to pay MD.

It's because your DMV has a cool website. I love the personalized license plate generator. It tells you what's available in real time. In MD I have to fill out a form with my top choices (most of which are gone in NV) and hope for the best.

8.25% tax
Adding up all extra fees on top of MSRP pops the actual rate to 9.5%
