Local sales tax in Houston is 8.25% but on vehicles you only pay the base state rate of 6.25%. We don't have state income tax and for the last two years and next, you can deduct "big ticket" sales tax items on your federal return in addition to your daily sales taxes (either keep receipts or a formula to estimate it.) Texas also allows you to subtract the trade-in value from your new car purchase and just pay sales tax on the difference. I paid outright for my MINI so didn't get that advantage. Weirdly on my recent A3 purchase, the trade-in value of my M3 was more than the purchase price of the Audi so I didn't pay any sales tax.
