R50/53 Cooper MPG
I've had my MC for 10 days now and am falling deeper and deeper in love with her. I've been toying with the computer and closely watch the MPG display. Around town (which I live in an urban area for the most part), it's been averaging 28.2. I have sort of a lead foot because I'm enjoying how peppy she is, so perhaps others are getting better than that on their MCs. I have a manual transmission.
I went out for a purely highway drive of about 90 miles just to see what she got at specific speeds. Here's the results:
60 MPH 41.5
65 MPH 40.0
70 MPH 37.2
75 MPH 34.0
80 MPH 31.0
90 MPH 26.0 (but who cares, it was too much fun!!)
Looks like if I want to be frugal, I should stick to 60 MPH (Yawn!!!)
So what have you MC drivers noticed with your gas mileage? I'd love to hear!

I live in Michigan where it has been quite cold. I have less than 1000 miles on my MCS and I am averaging around 25 to 26 mpg in a mixure of local and freeway jaunts. I certainly have not been driving with economy in mind.

Oh crap; hit the wrong button.

My cooper averages around 27 mpg - best I've gotten was 33 on the highway, but I usually average about 80 on the highway... so...
My MCS... I was pulling 34.5 for about 7 miles today on backroads, in 6th gear at 40-50 mph. when I had to stop, I didn't let it go above 2000 rpm. *shrug*

My MC was getting 31-32 until the cold weather, then it dropped to 27-29. The trip computer is not a perfect measurement device
My MCS trip computer is suggesting 27 at the moment, but with only 130 miles I cannot yet fill it up.

I regularly got 31-32, until they did the engine upgrade- then I dropped to
24-25. I fussed, and the dealer reinstalled the upgrade, with no change in mileage. Don't know if others experienced mileage decrease with the upgrade.

If you look at % change in speed and % change in fuel use you get:
60-65 8% speed change, 3.7% fuel
65-70 7.4% speed, 7.25% fuel
70-75 6.9% speed, 9% fuel
75-80 6.45% speed, 9.2% fuel
80-90 11.75% speed, 17.5% fuel.
I have found that on the highway it seems to have a 'sweet spot' for fuel economy of around 70. Your numbers show this to be the 'inflection point' in the speed vs. fuel use chart.
I'm getting 35.4mpg for 2,250 miles in my Cooper 5 speed. That is with about 75% highway and 25%city. The highway miles are not 75mph Interstate driving but 55-65 US and State roads much of it in the mountains. The city driving is a lot of traffic lights and short trips which kill mpg.
Your observation are very much in line with what I have experienced also.

Most of my driving is city, in San Francisco. The computer reads that I'm getting about 21 MPG when in town. On the couple of times that I've mixed up highway and city driving, I've had up to 32 MPG. I'm compared actual results with the Cooper's computer and it's nearly identical. I was surprised that the computer is so accurate.
I rest the trip odometer religously at each fill up. Unfortunatly I have to much fun driving to get any kind of bragable mileage. I do seam to do better than 30 most of the time, but i have never really figured it out. Someday maybe. If I was really looking for milage I would have bought a geo metro MC 10000 miles.

Agreed...after 70mph or so, you seem to 'fall off a cliff', mileage-wise.
Example: Trip from Lexington, KY to Paducah, KY and back (two diff't routes)
- Trip out: 240 miles of straight superhighway (80 mph, avg): 26mpg
- Trip back: 300+ miles of US 60  (60mph avg): 38mpg
Amazing how speed can make a difference...(okay, plus maybe a tailwind on the return trip...)
