Road Trip...Brake Test...Vegas drivers

Got home last weekend from my Road trip to pick up my MCS from Classic in Ohio. Took off from Ohio to get to Yellowstone ASAP to spend a day or two there for pictures, relaxation, etc. I had two long mileage days on the trip: the second day (850 miles) and the last day (1050 miles).

On that last day, I drove all of the way home (to SoCal) from Yellowstone in northeastern Wyoming. While passing through Las Vegas at ~11:00 P.M., I got to test the brakes on the car. :-) Some yahoo about four car lengths ahead of me, in the next lane over, lost control of his Mazda sedan. He proceeded to fishtail, then veer across my lane, hit the K-rail, spin out, and come to a full stop directly in front of me, in the fast lane, initially going 80 mph ! After a good stop with 10 feet to spare, I realized I was sitting in the fast lane with 80mph traffic coming up behind me ! I squeezed between him and the barrier and parked. I was shaking when I got out of the car. The guy's car was a mess, but he was OK. The Mini could not have performed better, coming to a flat, square stop with no lockup or swerving.

I had absolutely no problem staying awake the rest of the way home!(got home at 2:30 a.m.)

I'm not one to name my car or anything of the kind, but I did give my MCS a pat on the back for getting me out of this episode unscathed

I've put some pics up in my user gallery of my new JCW MCS - I'm one very happy owner so far!

Here's a piccie of your beautiful new MINI from your gallery. I think after it's superb performance (and your great driving/reflexes), your MINI deserves a name!

Hey! Keep in mind when you talk about Vegas drivers...almost no-one is actually from here. I'll bet the Mazda either still or recently had California plates on it.

Sorry, I am not generalizing on this thread (I do have familiy that live in Vegas.) However, I have had more close calls on the freeways there than just about anywhere else I've been across the country, usually from people driving way to fast in really tight quarters, or being cut off very, very close at speed on the freeway.

It was never by anyone in a Mini, more often than not by someone in an older modified Honda...with Nevada plates (I looked). I've had three or four incedents in the past sevral months, including the worst one as mentioned above (who also had Nevada plates). I am not trying to start anything here at all, just stating my observations.

Downtown LA is not so great either, I've just had worse luck in Vegas... The one place that might have been worse was downtown NYC, but I was only on foot there (and that was bad enough!)

Hey, hey, hey, Agro! The Vegas money machine is only too happy to strip the wallets of all we Californians though, eh?

But of course. I thknk that's why the locals all watch out for Cali plates. Cali drivers here are either drunk on the free drinks or pissed off because they lost all their money.
