Hi everyone...
This topic was brought up in another thread (see " Great Canadian Drives&quot but I felt it would be good as a more general topic as well.

My submission is of course... The Tail of The Dragon

You can read up more on it here.

It's located in North Carolina, has 318 curves and cut backs in an 11 mile stretch!

All the more reason to Motor On!!

Anyone in Northern California can take the Alum Rock road tht goes all over the valley of San Jose, its very twisty and terribly complicated,a great run for anyone looking to up their driving skills, up and down hill. I went on a drive with BMW CCA and it was a blast, we stopped half way through the drive at the James Lick Observatory to have lunch and later that day we saw a large group of V W's and an NSX car club enjoying the same run! If yu want more info PM me for directions!! Have fun!

Another road leading out of Silicon Valley to the South, at the end of the Almaden Expwy, passing by Calero and Uvas reservoirs and eventualy hooking up with 152 which will take you over to the coast and Hwy 1. I've been driving most of this route twice a day (to and from work) for the last 3 years and I haven't gotten tired of it. And since I've gotten my MCS I'm enjoying it even more.

With our new car, we're just thinking of any excuse to go driving (Humm....feel like some clam chowder!?) and we're trying to remember all the winding roads we've ever taken in the SF Bay ARea.

I think the drive up Hwy 1 past The City to Stinson Beach/Tomales Bay is the best! What a hoot! That was our first ride after bringing Maxine home. While you can't go really fast b/c of the traffic, all the short quick turns with the dips and hills were much more fun!
Another winding one is Hwy 84 from 280 to the coast is fun, if there's no traffic. The road from La Honda to Pescadero might be a better 2nd half.
Then there's the drive from 280 to Big Basin on Hwy 9. Lots of tight turns!
I'm looking forward to the end of summer when the heat and traffic through Gold Country subsides and we take the road to Tahoe. We do Hwy 50 all the time for the ski season, and it will be exciting to replay the drive along the river in our MC!

How about Decker Canyon from Malibu to Westlake Village (or vice versa)? We drove it the night I got my Emma, in the pitch black! (The auto-leveling headlights take getting used to on a road like that.) It's about 14 miles long with REAL hairpin turns and tons of em. Luckily you can tell when someone else is coming from the opposite direction when you see their headlights, because we were all over that road! It's amazing for about 4 miles, then you think to yourself, "is it ever going to end?" It's a real rollercoaster roadster. Kanan is okay if you're the only one on it. I've noticed how afraid other people are of corners. Now that my Cooper handles them so well I can't stand to brake going into a corner- it's torture!

Although it's not terribly curvy (in some places it is), HWY 1 up the coast to Monterey and further north has the most spectacular views of the bright blue Pacific with the rock cliffs! I highly recommend that one! Going north to south is better though, so you can pull over at all the lookout points to enjoy the view.

Now I wish I was someplace eles! South Florida roads have two things in common... (1) they're all flat and (2) they're all straight. I find myself taking expressways and getting off on roads with circular or long bend on/off ramps just to get the feel of my Mini! But my Indi-Blue Cooper looks great on A1A!

Try 78 from Escondido to Ramona, or a little further to Julian for some apple pie, then you'll probably have to come back. Good drive tho'.

Hey blu02, try controlled swerving side to side on a wide, empty, flat street! (Of course make sure there are no kids around and it's safe.) I can't help from doing it when I come home from work each day- driving through the neighborhood all swervy like I'm dodging kittens. It will make both you and your MINI feel better instantly!

MAKE YOUR OWN CURVES!

There are some really good roads in like Harford and other counties surrounding Baltimore, out in the country.....and in Western Maryland near Deep Creek when you get into the Appalacians there are some nice ones too......driving out Cromwell Bridge road and through Loch Raven is always a good time or out Jarrettsville Pike....but there can be alot of deer so you have to be really careful.....

Another good curvy So Cal road  is the 74. Drive up through Hemet to idyllwild. Take the 74 all the way to Palm Desert  Grab some chow and if the you want to catch the freeway back the 10's right there. One caution
