Motoring Tunes

Hi all,

Only my second post on NAM and about a year away from possibly getting my mini , see my first post, and already I'm trying to put together a great motoring music mix CD to play on that first ride home.

Here's what I've gotten so far (no particular order...just the order in which they play):
Highway to Hell AC/DC
Little Deuce Coupe Beach Boys
Holiday Green Day
Midnight Show The Killers
I'm a Believer Smash Mouth
Johnny B. Good Chuck Berry
Superheros Daft Punk
Too Good Too Bad Cowboy Bebop OST (to those who don't know...think jazz)
Learn to Fly Foo Fighters
Staring at the Sun The Offspring
Immigrant Song Led Zepplin
Run-Around Blues Traveler
Take it Easy Eagles
Hit the Road Jack Ray Charles
Stiff Upper Lip AC/DC
Float on Modest Mouse
Another One Bites the Dust Queen
Photograph Weezer
I Get Around Beach Boys
Twentysomething Jamie Cullum
The Empire Strikes First Bad Religion
The Kids Aren't Alright The Offspring
I Can't drive 55 Sammy Hagar
The Little Old Lady From Pasedena Jan and Dean
Turn to Stone ELO

So any song suggestions I could get? As you can see they don't have to be ABOUT driving, but I'm going for an atmosphere. Got playlists of your own please post. I like just about any music genre out there so please I really want to make one heck of a CD and I have 80 min. to fill and songs that are disposable in that list.

No music collection is complete in a Mini Cooper if it doesn't carry the tune from The Italian Job. The Soundtrack doesn't even have it but the CD you need is by Timo Maas called "To Get Down". It's got the little... da,da..da-da, da, da, da-da da da... oh hell, you get the idea. It's the song played at every action scene that matters.

no cruise is complete without that little tune!

National Lampoon's Vacation Theme

Gotta have

"Holiday Road"

by Lindsay Buckingham (of Fleetwood Mac fame)

That's the theme song in the beginning of the movie.

Sez you! Personally, I prefer the tunes from the original film. Particularly
"Getta Bloomin' Move On!", better known as "Self-Preservation Society".

Try a little Devo, "Uncontrollable Urge" is a great tune, just play it loud, or you'll just see that crap-@$$ Mitsubishi commercial in front of your eyes..

Cheers,
Matthew Z.

Thought I'd give my old thread a bit of a bump for two reasons:

1) I thought I might catch some that didn't reply to the first try as well as any new song ideas

2) I've changed some of the songs in my original list and probably the order has been changed a bit.

My most current Motoring Tunes v1.4 cd plays like this:

Highway to Hell - AC/DC
Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf
Little Deuce Coupe - Beach Boys (the influence on my name)
Holiday - Green Day (probably will be replaced when I find a good song to do so)
Midnight Show - The Killers
Good Times Roll - The Cars
Johnny B. Good - Chuck Berry
Superheroes - Daft Punk
Staring at the Sun - The Offspring
Inner Logic - Bad Religion (odd song but will probably stay there due to my Crazy Taxi addiction on the Dreamcast)
Immagrant Song - Led Zepplin
No Particular Place to Go - Chuck Berry
Run-Around - Blues Traveler
Hit the Road Jack - Ray Charles
Rock'n Down the Highway - Doobie Brothers
Stiff Upper Lip - AC/DC
Float On - Modest Mouse
Another One Bites the Dust - Queen
Get Back - The Beatles (may or may not go...kind of iffy on this one)
I Get Around - Beach Boys
Don't Stop Me Now - Queen (great song...Top Gear's #1 driving song of all time)
The Kids Aren't Alright - The Offspring
I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar
To Get Down - Timo Maas

any suggestions for songs? I'll have to say I'm not much of a Techno guy. I like classic and alternative rock the most but as you see I do make room for a couple of Techno songs. I'll also accept some classical as well but most of them are far too long to have on a single cd. Yes, I know it would be best to dump them all on a MP3 player or iPod...but I want this to be for my first ride home in my MINI when I get it and I doubt I'll take my Nomad with me.

Some of these tracks can peel the paint off of your new car...

Metal Machine Music (track 1) - Lou Reed
Search and Destroy - Iggy Pop And The Stooges
Sister Ray - The Velvet Underground
Marquee Moon - Television
30 Seconds Over Tokyo - Pere Ubu
Summertime Blues - Blue Cheer
Roadrunner - The Modern Lovers
New Day Rising - Husker Du
TV Party - Black Flag
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
L.A. Blues - The Stooges

Just some suggestions.

Noooo! That's just MEAN!

I purchased Lou Reed's double album, Metal Machine Music, the day it was released. Had just installed an expensive new moving coil cartridge ("needle") in my Technics direct-drive SL-1300 turntable, and cranked the volume on my Marantz 1040 amp .... OH the HUMANITY!

After trying different spots on each of the 4 sides of the album in despair, I realized Lou had pulled a maasive art joke off on his unsuspecting fans.

In reading the liner notes, I found that even Lou had been unable to ever listen through the entire 80 minutes of the piece in it's entirety!

I pretty much stopped buying music without some sort of preview after that moment.

For those who might be intrigued by the idea, MMM was an experiment. It's sort of antimatter universe ambient music: formless, chaotic, and unrelenting. Props to Lou Reed for releasing it and pretty much resetting his fan base to zero, and even bigger props for not caring about it, and continuing on to make more and better music since!

I would add

"Catch me if you can" Dave Clark 5 I think
"Shut down" beach boys

However, my favorite tune is the SC whine and the exhaust note

How can you have "Johnny B Good" and not have "No particular place to go"?

For Beatles I'd go with "Day Tripper" or "Drive My Car" before "Get back"

Other Suggestoins
Rose Royce - Car Wash
George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone
George Thorogood - One bourbon, one scotch and one beer
The Doors - Roadhouse Blues
Dion and the Belmonts - The Wanderer
Sublime - What I got
ACDC - Whole Lotta Rosie(some of ACDC's best guitar work if you ask me)
Lenny Kravitz - are you gonna go my way
Beatles - Ticket to ride
Beatles - I feel fine
Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
Sam & Dave - Soul Man
Free - Alright Now
Young MC - Bust a move
ZZ Top - La Grange
Bachman Turner Overdrive - Takin care of business
Dannii Minogue - I begin to Wonder

My adds (I'm guilty of a very ecclectic collection):

1) AC/DC - Thunderstruck
2) Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
3) Electric Light Orchestra - Do Ya
4) Queen - Tie Your Mother Down or Keep Yourself Alive
5) KISS - Detroit Rock City or Shout It Out Loud or I Love It Loud
6) Jethro Tull - Skating Away On The Thin Ice of a New Day
7) Fatboy Slim - Praise You
8) Simon & Garfunkle - Cecilia
9) Paul Simon - Me and Julio
10) Outkast - Hey Ya
11) Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin'
12) Sly & the Family Stone - Dance to the Music
13) Rammstein - Du Hast
14) Pink Floyd - On the Turning Away [Heck, just about anything!]
15) Led Zepplin - Out on the Tiles
16) Blind Melon - No Rain
17) Collective Soul - Shine
18) Iron Maiden - 2 Minutes to Midnight (Run to the Hills is a better motoring tune, but not PC )
19) Kid Rock - Only God Knows Why
20) Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Boom Boom Boom Boom
21) Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
22) Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like I Do
23) Sweet - Teenage Rampage or Little ***** or Wig Wam Bam (dumb title, GREAT song)
24) Slayde - Run Run Away
25) REO Speedwagon - Roll With The Chages or Ridin The Storm Out
26) The Doors - Riders on the Storm or The End
27) Blackfoot - Train Train
28) Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Disaster
29) The Who - Magic Bus
30) The Guess Who - No Sugar Tonight
31) The Tokens - The Lion Sleeps Tonight

34) Edgar Winters Group - Frankenstein

I can probably list a couple hundred more given the time...

Red House Painters - Songs for a Blue Guitar

This is the album that seems most "MINI" to me and I have listened to it when picking up both of my cars.

Wow, I must say I'm impressed by the response. After spending a few hours listening to all the music suggestions, a few from the same bands, the new Rolling Stones album, and the new Eric Clapton I think my ears are about to bleed. Yes I do listen to ALL suggestions so even if I'm iffy about the style or whatever I listen anyway and then pass my judgement on it. Some get downloaded and most probably wont even my personal Motoring Tunes cd, but I love listening to new stuff or old stuff that I had forgotten about. Pretty soon I should start hosting a radio show dedicated to motoring tunes. Nah I don't have nearly the collection to do so (not even 4 gigs of music yet), but I'm getting so many songs that would be great just for that purpose it takes me a week or more of casual listening to get through my entire collection.

I do have to say, the music of the SC is quite beautiful in itself.

[QUOTE=am0eba]Noooo! That's just MEAN!

Yeah, I was being facetious. That is a tough record to listen to, in fact, it's best use is to clear out a room.

Of all the songs I listed that I would include in a mix using driving songs I'd have to include "Roadrunner" by The Modern Lovers (Jonathan Richman). That song is a great driving song.

One of those songs I really like along those lines is from Aire on the Soundtrack of "The Virgin Suicides" and is song # 12 "Dead Bodies". When I hear it I want to fly.

Fat Bottom Girls by Queen

Lost in a Supermarket by The Clash

The whole Beck Odele CD (it is one of the few CD's that every song sounds like a different person did it, but it is all Beck.

And the Too Fat Polka (You can have her, I don't want her, she's too fat for me!) Want strange looks? Cruise anywhere with polka music playing it freaks people out big time.
