frozen out tonight

Darn....we're having a bit of an ice storm with heavy snow and high winds....my 04 MC was frozen tight....had to crawl in through the boot and push the doors open from the inside. This is the first time this has happened to me, but the conditions ouside are pretty nasty here in Mass. Once I got going though, no problems with my Pirelli Snow Controls leading me home

It will be interesting to see if the supposed door handle redesign helps in the morning - brand new GBMINI#3 is braving the snow & high winds now, having faced earlier freezing rain ... looks good on the chrome mirrors though!

At 23 degrees with snow on the ground and in the air, my driver's side handle didn't want to budge this afternoon..... but with more pressure it finally did give in. While waiting for the new handles, opening my door continues to be a crap shoot in the cold and wet.

The new handles will do nothing to stop the doors from opening if they are frozen. What they will prevent is snow and ice building up IN the handle and not letting the door cycle to open mode again. If snow builds up in the handle, hold it depressed, and with a snow brush, wipe the snow out.If it has become packed in there, pick it out with small sharp pointy thing like a small screw driver.

i just posted this question on another thread but here it is as well...
this morning i was locked out then locked in... (got out the passenger door, thankfully)
i'm assuming when the door handles thaw this won't be a problem anymore? (until snow/ice gets jammed in there again, of course)

Not much proof on a single test - but no issues opening either door at any time this morning.
The windows were frozen to the rubber so could not "dip" but that was the only "issue".

Think Spring, or, "Chicago as Winter Vacation Mecca"

New Englanders (hardy souls, well equipped for tough winters and proud of being so) were heard on NPR in Chicago this morning, saying they have HAD ENOUGH ALREADY!

The ONLY plus that I can see - it's a good thing that mountains are so dang beautiful dressed in snow! Wait don't interrupt me, you're going to say that it doesn't have to be winter to see pretty snowcapped mtns, you get to see that year round, right?

One more thing, if the temps were warmer (like they have been in Chicago) we would just complain about wet, dirty, splattery roads, and being compelled to wash the MINI every other day!

Hang in there, this Chicagoan knows why you stay there despite the many trials and tribulations,
Tatt

I'm actually in the minority of people here, in that I am ALWAYS rooting for more snow. I don't care if there's 2 feet on the ground, I want another 2 feet. I just enjoy it. I don't mind shoveling it, I don't mind driving in it, and I even enjoy hearing everyone else whine about it. As far as I'm concerned the one and only drawback is when flights get delayed or cancelled.

I got the new door handles last week, and this morning they were completely covered in ice (we had freezing rain last night BEFORE the 6" of snow). They worked perfectly, and this is exactly the kind of situation in which my old ones would consistently fail me.

It's very promising that a couple of you have reported positive outcomes with the new handle. I'm looking forward to knowing that my doors will open easily in the snow and freezing cold, but if replacements don't arrive in the next couple of days I'll have to wait until next winter test them out. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

I've had new handles for about a month now and have had no problems. They are stiffer, and the pivot point is different.I have been letting the snow build up to see how well they return to the the rest/released position, and they have been fine.Just remember,it is not the snow or ice ON the handle, but what gets stuck in where the handle seats in the released position.
Lock-deicer works, but try to keep it off the paint.
