R50/53 Fan
Hi, New owner. Anyone else think that fan is noisy? while driving around the system seems to pick up
a lot of "wind noise" Dealer says that's normal.
I have the Automatic system. Fan seems to stay at a higher speed then I like.

And here I thought that was just wind noise, duh. I blew it off because my BMW 740 does it too (That comes from the sunroof mostly) It never occured to me it could be the fan. I thought it was just a BMW thing. Thanks for pointing that out!
Yep - we just live with it. I also bypass the "auto" setting and use the fan at its lowest speed. Even that's louder than most cars I've been in. When I'm travelling at a decent speed I'll kill the fan completely. The road speed is enough to drive air thru the heating system.
A mechanic friend of mine says it's noisy because the fan is right up front on the top of the dash.
The wind noise that gets added to the fan sound is pretty interesting, isn't it?

I do the same thing, I bypass the auto setting and use it at its lowest setting which i also find kinda loud. So, what I do is, when the car is warmed up, I turn off the fan entirely, which still leaves the heat on and I raise the temperature a little. and its fine. Oh, and having the heated seats helps alot too!!

I used the manual setting for a while because I didn't want the AC on in the winter since it comes on with the auto setting. But now I'm addicted to the auto setting because it's so easy to use. For me even when it's WAY below freezing I only have the high fan setting for a few minutes after the engine has warmed up...so I don't worry about it...

I have the Auto HVAC also... You can turn off the a/c part and still have the unit on auto... but I have also noticed that the fan doesn't seem to ever use the lower speed/s on auto. I also use the manual fan settings for less fan noise... I have not noticed that much wind noise either from windows, windscreen or sunroof... It seems pretty quiet to me even at 65mph.
