Hey Donna and Mike,
Wow, I'm stunned. I've been recovering from the flu, and have been away from NAM this past week. Not a nice way to come back and see this happen to my friends.

I'm just glad you guys are ok.

Richard

OMG I can't believe that happened. I don't know what I would do if that happened to me. I'm so glad no one was hurt. I would definatelly make sure the car is not to blame before you do take an insurance clame. If it's a problem with a defective wiring harness, then it's not your fault. Geese i'm almost at a loss of words looking at the pics. The only thing that came to my head was go order another one now!!!! LOL Good luck with everything...

Worst part was, the 2 front tires were melted to the road so it took a bit of pounding to get them off. The rims can be cleaned up and we'll need to buy 2 new tires, but he wasn't letting those go - LOL!!!
What kind of rims were they, they did look bodacious? I am so sorry about this. You must be going through some tough times, but keep your head held high, I'm sure Scooter would want you to get another MINI and enjoy it just as much. Just remember although some of us are noobs we will support you all the way! If I lived anywhere near Cali I'd ask for directions to your house and give you my MINI until you got your new one, Harmon seems to be a twin brother to Scooter, exactly alike.
Keep your Head held High!

Wow, that's nuts! Sorry to hear about your MINI . It is very fortunate that it was sitting with nobody inside, and not near anything else that could catch fire. Good luck in finding a replacement.

Donna and Mike,

I'm shocked to learn what happened to your MCS. Sorry that you lost a prized possession and veritable family member, but relieved that it wasn't any worse (as it could have been with your parents' home so close by).

Chin up, you've still got each other, another MINI and, hopefully, an understanding and competent insurance adjuster.

Our hearts go out to you in this terrible tragedy . Hopefully your insurance will treat you right. A year ago my sailboat was lost due to a violent storm. I was crushed. But since I had good insurance, the boat was replaced with a better, newer model! I hope the same happens for both of you.

So what color are you going to get for your new one?

Best of luck,

Scott & Jen.

I like some of the names that have been suggested - Scooter2, Scooter Too-ter, etc. - but personally, I think a replacement should be named:

The Phoenix!

Woah Just got my internet connected and I come to NAM to see this news. That's horrible! I hope they figure out what happened.

I'm the owner of an early '02 MCS, and am gonna make sure it stays parked outside until we figure out what's going on here.

A couple of weird things are STILL going on with my car:

- Drive it around for a while, turn it off and it smells like hot coolant. Checking the coolant after the engine cools shows that it's at its normal levels and no leaks
- The engine often seems to choke when idling. This is well documented here.

Again, sorry for your loss

So sorry for your loss

As an act of sympathy, my 2002 MCS has lit its airbag warning light for the 7th time. I'm taking it in tomorrow for a reset and a good checking-over. Perhaps these cars are trying to tell us something...

This is what get's my shorts all twisted about the freezing doors handles, your trapped in the car, period.
Many years ago,I was a front seat passenger in an old beater, the dash started on fire.Getting out was priority one!!!
Oh yeah, I'm getting those replaced too.

Very small update - we received the Official Fire Department report yesterday:

"On February 20th at 1824 hours, engine 2511 was dispatched to a reported vehicle fire at the corner of Sea View and Bellaire St in Del Mar California. On arrival at scene the crew found the reported vehicles engine compartment to be fully involved in fire. The fire had also breached the passenger compartment and was actively burning the dash area. The crew quickly extinguished the fire and began extensive overhaul."

The Fire Captain is 100% sure that this was not arson. Either today or tomorrow, whenever a flat bed is available, the car will be going to it's resting place for USAA to start their official investigation.

Again, my heart is overflowing with emotions with all the responses here. We thank all of you SO very much for the thoughts, pictures, links, etc.

Donna

Donna, if you get a chance to see it again, grab the MINI badge off of the boot for your Scooter scrapbook!

Donna/Mike,

I dug out this photo of your hardtop taken during "The Italian Job" Washington, DC Premier Event help in May 2003. Hope it brings back better memories.

Donna & Mike,

Oh my god! I'm so sorry to hear about this. I'm glad you & Mike are OK, and that this doesn't seem to be deliberate. Makes me want to cry.

Know that you're in the thoughts & prayers of MINI people 'round the world.

Get Mike to give you a hug from me & you give him one, too.

Jim

OMG I just saw this. I'm so sorry to hear about Scooter's untimely demise. I'm glad that you and Mike, and your parents, are all okay. At least you've still got Ariel to keep you in the MINI spirit!

I hope they figure out what happened... and that it's not endemic of all '02 MINIs!

I know it won't seem like much since I'm very new here, but I'm so sorry for your loss. God has a plan for everything, and though it might not feel like it right now, He's got something better in mind for you.

Even in the short time I've been here I can tell how much you guys mean to this community. My heart and prayers go out to the both of you.

So sorry to learn about this.

But if it had to catch fire, this was the best way for it to happen -- nobody hurt and no other property damage. Considering all of the horrible scenarios which could have happened, you are very fortunate indeed.

On the lighter side, you're going to have lots of interesting stories to tell about your experiences with Minis!
