That is so awful. At least you are both OK, though. Keep us posted on the cause as it sounds like a major mystery.

Donna/Mike:
I'm so sad for you. I once couldn't imagine you not zipping around the DC area. I once couldn't imagine that you'd ever get the convertible. I can't imagine without Scooter, now. <sniffle>

Pick out a new car. While I hope Mike gets a new MINI, just make it something you love as much. But for what it is worth -- I hear there isn't much of a wait on a new MCS.

Hugs (and really BIG hugs),
PB

They were an early Christmas present from Scooter. And yes - we did manage to get them off the car and switched them out with other ones and tires that were bald (the original tires and rims). USAA said no problem as it would make little to no difference on the claim.

Worst part was, the 2 front tires were melted to the road so it took a bit of pounding to get them off. The rims can be cleaned up and we'll need to buy 2 new tires, but he wasn't letting those go - LOL!!!

I'm so sorry to hear about this you guys! Sebby & I both send our condolences. I'm glad to hear that you both are safe though.

Do you think there's a rainbow bridge (or rather a twisty rainbow) for MINIs?

Actually, if I remember correctly, it had to do with a bad seal somewhere on the engine. I think that there's a picture somewhere on the site of what went wrong. His fire was different though, his passenger compartment was still ok.

Anyway, along with the rest, I'm so sorry! Godspeed to getting it sorted out. And the important thing is noone was hurt. As much as we love our cars, they can be replaced! And you mentioned that you have USAA. They're one of (if not) the best in the buisiness, so the process should be as painless as it could possibly be.

Obviously this has been said before, but as fellow San Diegan MINI owner, I have to pass along my best wishes to you! I hope all the upcoming insurance claim and paperwork (and new car shopping) go as smoothly as possible.

Please accept more condolences. As others have said, it is just a car, but somehow it is more than that. I think you know what I mean.

Let me be the first to offer my services. If you do buy a new MINI and just happen to buy from somewhere non-CA (to avoid markup or wait, whatever) like, say, D & R in Indy, I would be willing to deliver it for you!

Always up for a road trip!
Cheers,

I'm glad no one was hurt, and neither were you stranded someplace unsafe

BTW, Do I remember you guys being local to Hampton Roads, Va a while back? (or am I thinking of someone else?)

Oh man, that is absolutely horrible! I can't imagine how you must feel - I couldn't sleep for a week when my baby was in the body shop - I can't even fathom losing it altogether!

They still ARE DC people. They've just gone on a brief hiatus.... We hope

Here are a couple of pics to help remember Scooter and her glory days in Virginia. These shots were taken at the Farewell (see you later!) party held at the DCMM Herndon hang out.

Please let me add my condolences to the list. When I first heard the story, I could not believe it! A MINI randomly bursting into flames? I hope that you both can get it all sorted out quickly and with as little pain as possible. After reading all the posts, I now know what a great car Scooter was, and that he will be missed. It has been said before, but he was not a car, but a member of the family. While you cannot replace him, hopefully something good can come of this tragedy. And dont worry- he is safe in MINI heaven now looking down on you!

Tori

We're late seeing the news (4 pages in), but this thread leaves me utterly without appropriate words. I am truly sorry for your loss.
