We did take the pay off from USAA and bought another MINI. It was then up to USAA to determine if they thought it was worth it to go after MINI. Well, we received a letter from the lawyer at USAA just last week stating that in fact, they DID think it was worth it and have now filed papers.

In the mean time, back in June, a rep from MINI did go look at the car and guess what??? He determined that is was no fault of MINI that the car burned up.. Gee - what a surprise!!! (I'm being sarcastic). We fully figured that would be the case...

We also found out that the fuse (F6) that caused the problem, was RECALLED IN CANADA and the UK.......but NOT IN THE US.....now you tell me - what the heck???????

So there ya have it.........the waiting continues....... and thanks for asking...

Donna
sorry to bring up a possible dead subject - and maybe you posted the answer on another thread - but since this thread was brought back to life, I just noticed this one. What was the outcome of the investigation Donna?

Well Jen - looks like you are number 5 - there have been 3 others posted in the last 3 weeks - all previous to 05'.

To answer the other question asked, ours was determined to be the fuse in the ABS system - they have now changed to a 20 amp vs. 30 amp. No Service Bulletins and No Recalls.... There is another thread that explains it all...

OMG Donna, THREE others posted in the last 3 weeks!!!! That's insane! I spoke to Jim this morning and he told me that someone he knows in Virginia had hers catch fire last week. Is that one of the 3 you know about or is it a fourth??? Jim's going to send her my email address so we can compare notes.

I've been trying to find some more information on this and somewhere I saw that there is a recall in England and at least one other country (maybe Canada?), but not here. All I can say is that if this keeps happening, MINI's going to have a class action suit on their hands!

Thanks for the condolences on Peanut. I hope she's either very easily fixed or completely totalled. I would hate to have her back and always be wondering if something's been weakened by the fire. I couldn't actually see any damage just by looking into the engine bay so I'm thinking the fire went out early enough to not be a big problem.

I'm also hoping that unlike the others, mine with relatively little damage will give a better picture as to exactly what failed. Maybe that's what's needed to get MINI off their butts on this issue!

Yes - one of the one's I know about is in Virginia.

What we found out last year was - the amps themselves were recalled in England and Canada - but not the MINIs themselves. You may have heard that from someone who read our original threads.

Mike and Donna.

Similar situation happen with mine 8/28/11.

My mini Cooper Spontaneous Caught on FIRE.

8/25/11 Before all this happen, I took the car in for Service. I stated to the Service Advisor the car was not driving right and I'm sure some Services needs to be looked at (oil change etc...) My buddy ol' pal puts the key into the card reader "Nope nothing showed up you good to go" I exit with a smile on my face never thinking twice, could be my mind playing car games.

Saturday 8/27/11 (10:30p) Car sitting from a drive after dinner. Came home parked the and didn't hear or notice anything. (I am always ware about funny things on my car)

Sunday 8/28/11 (4:00p)
Police came knocking on the door My car was on fire and Plantation FIRE DEPT was in the process of putting out the FIRE. The cause unknown. The fire Dept guy said " from the looks of this incident, what’s seems to cause this was the ELECTRICAL Flames were shooting 8'ft in the air. Its a tragedy this has happen. Cannot understand why?? The car is totaled there's no engine there's nothing left besides the some of the interior backseat cabin. The rear of the car is still there.

I am tired of heading over to Vista Mini Coconut Creek and having them explain there never nothing wrong with my car. 3 1/2 months ago my fuel pump goes, and was told I had to pay for $850 pump that was called a recall. I am shocked and lost for words that Vista cannot get there act or services dept together.

The fuel pump issue was something else, I visited them several times before they actually handled it. Not after I took to to Precision Werk in Miami and Louie looked over it clean the carbs and that still cost me $$ then then the lights came back on that's when the card reader worked.
