Oh, Donna and Mike! What can I say? I saw the title of your post, and remembering your key-ing incident, thought oh my god, what now?

What a wonderful online community we have - such an outpouring of sympathy! There isn't much else I can add to what everyone else has already said, except maybe this:

When the little bastard finally managed to steal the stereo out of my previous car (on his second try!), I said to my wife, "Well, I guess God felt it was time for me to get a better stereo." I spent a day shopping and came home with a very, very nice stereo - much better than the one I had before.

A good way to help yourselves get over your loss is to buy something really nice for each other. (Like an '05 MCS?)

I hope your insurance company does right by you!

Yes, here is his web page detailing the rebuild process. He bought the car after it burned, so I don't think the cause of the fire is known by the new owner.

Very sad for your loss.

I see a No Parking sign on the pole right next to the car in that first picture. I guess they really mean it!
You might want to edit that first picture before you send it to the insurance company.

LOL!! WE are allowed to park there because it's my parents house... They put that out there years ago to keep others from using it - as parking in their area is - well - very hard to find...

Donna and Mike:

Very sad news indeed! But I am also very glad that you guys are OK, after all cars are replaceable but people are not.

I have been doing some research on your incident and have found a few discussion threads from www.mini2.com Here they are:

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...ht=fire+damage

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...ht=fire+damage

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...ht=fire+damage

What happened to your MCS was no accident. It appears to be related to power steering fluid leaking.

MINIUSA needs to attend to this ASAP, because it seems to affect early build 2002 MINIs.

Let me know.

Oh MAN

Donna, Mike,

So sorry to see the pics and read the story. The only time I saw Scooter, he was on the trailer, packed to the roof with stuff.

The blessing is that cars can be replaced and people can't. Let me know if there is anything we can do. Hope to be out there in March or April.

Sorry to see and hear about your loss.

As for those who say cars don't burn while parked, we watched as a VW went poof in a mall parking lot. Something electrical because you could smell the burnt wiring well before the flames showed themselves.

I just realized this month's photo on the NAM calendar was probably taken out the window of that very MINI.

Donna and Mike -- Life sure has a lot of twists and turns. You left DC area just after we arrived, and we missed you when we joined the DC Metro MINIs, and you went to San Diego. Ironic because we left San Diego to come here. Sorry about your MINI. Time to place a deposit on another. If it wasn't raining you could go to the beach today, and try to forget what happened.

my most sincere condolences to you guys. it's good to know that no one was hurt and there was no damage to ur parents house. having a car that looks almost just like yours (have aero grills, no driving lamps), those pictures hit home and are just scary and upsetting to look at. again my most sincere condolences.

bear in mind that while you may have turned off the key, the mini is not yet shutdown. there is a 5 minute timer keeping a few circuits active for things like the cooling fan, electric windows, trunk latch, etc. Your cat could still be red hot as well, so all you need is the wrong leak or a shorted wire.

Eek (I guess there is a symbol for this). Wow (not sure of the symbol). Speechless (enough of that).

I suppose you know that this sort of thing does NOT happen in Del Mar. It will be the talk of the town by now and probably the subject of gossip over high tea in La Jolla this afternoon. A shocking and sad loss for you and maybe the most excitement for some since demolition of the race track.

All kidding aside (but what can one do after what you went through--with no loss of life or property or even that tree--and all the sympathy and empathy from the amazing folks at NAM) my sincere best wishes.

LOL!!! Oh yeah - we were definitely the talk of Sea View Avenue over the past 2 days. I've never seen so many locals come out of the wood work to walk the dog...hehehehe. This was the biggest thing to hit Del Mar in a long time....too bad it had to involve our car...

And of course while we were out there in the pouring rain - doing what we needed to do in order to turn the car over to USAA, we had quite a site seeing thing going on. Every expensive (I was drooling) car in the neighborhood drove by at least twice!!

We want to thank all of you for the responses, kind words, etc. The MINI community is just awesome. I am so truly humbled by all of this. I have been sitting here literally in tears reading and re-reading this thread...

And thanks to all of you who have done a bit of research and posted links for us. Definitely a big help.. There just are no words to express how we are feeling right now....

I'm sorry to hear whenever a MINI bites the dust. I know you must be feeling terrible right now. I always say that life is a mixed blessing. Once the sick feeling in your stomach starts to fade, try to think of the 'blessing' side of this. Most importantly, no one was hurt. Also, no property besides the MINI was damaged. I know you'll always have a special place in your heart for that 1st MINI, but insurance will help with replacement, and you'll probably end up with an '05 with the new gearing, extra HP, maybe an LSD?

Meanwhile, I hope MINI will investigate the cause. Please keep us posted.

Condolences from DCMM folks.

The other 2002 DCMM Red/stripes MCS (mine) is still running fine. About a year ago, my Power Steering pump made itself into a crispy crittur and fried the wiring harness (no other damage). From the looks of your char marks, I suggest that the PS pump should be a prime candidate for the CSI:MINI folks to examine.

omg! I'm in absolute shock I know the pain of losing a MINI. I don't care what people say.. they're not just cars. Sooo sorry for you. Thankfully no one was in the car at the time.

I hope you decide to replace him with a Scooter Two-ter.. we can't lose one of our best Two MINI families!
