rain sensorr wipers

My rain sensing wipers are great. However when its raining and I am running errands and getting in and out of the car, when I restart the wipers have to be turned off and then on again to restart the sensing again. Is this right?

That's probably normal. It's the same way on my 330i.

It's normal -- but it is definitely annoying

Yeah, it seems normal. I got to try out mine the other day and with every errand stop had to turn em off then on to get rain sensor to activate. Doesn't seem like much of an improvement over just turning em on

It is annoying to have to turn on the rain sensing wipers.

The sensor is only to control the speed, not to have them go on and off automatically. I wish the MINI's would work like 3-series BMWs, on the 3-series you can leave it in the auto position and if you turn the car off and back on you only have to pull the stalk towards you (as in to wash the window) and it will reactivate the sensor, but for some reason that doens't work in the MINI.

That annoyed me as well until I thought about what would happen in an automatic carwash that had brushes.

It's a "safety feature," MINI is afraid that you'll never turn the wipers off, forget about them and drive into a car wash. Your wipers would engage in the wash and get trashed as the car went through... So to prevent that, the rain sensor must be reset for lack of a better term when you restart the car...

That's direct from ASK-MINI when I called them about this two years ago...
