R50/53 Odometer has an extra zero, or is trying to tell me something?

Odometer has an extra zero, or is trying to tell me something?

After passing the 10k mile mark I noticed a new "0" in between the trip odometer and odometer. It looks like this:

139.4 0 10560

Anyone know? Should I care? Is the car telling me I am a big zero?

Thanks for your anticipated theories and conjecture.

regards,
Red

Very bizarre. I can't help but I hate when 100 people read my thread and no one replies

Let all of us know when you figure it out.

So far it's only 7, but I will let you know when I figure it out. Or get used to it!

Red,

You're up to 32! What's your odometer up to?

Have you called the dealership yet? you must still be under warrenty!

I just clicked over 10k but I don't see anything unusual... I have an 05 if that makes any difference.

Could you post a picture of this if it still exists?

It looks like this: 139.4 0 10560. (139.4 being the trip odometer, 10560 being the odometer)

A photo would not really help, because we all have the same odometer. There is a space between the trip, the new zero and what would be the 100k digit.

Sure don't want to call the dealer. Been there too many times, and it runs fine. Maybe it will go away at 11, 000.

Red

It just looks weird since "1" doesn't fill up the whole space like say an "8" would... It appears that when you passed 9,999, both the "ten thousands" AND the "hundred thousands" (your extra "0") lit up... Wish I could say for sure if that's a "bug" or a "feature" (haha software developer humor), but alas I haven't got to even 2,000 miles yet - I should have just kept my big mouf shut.

It's interesting anyhow, I'm sure someone will be able to confirm/deny proper operation of the "odo".

edit: I wonder if Red has unlocked the myriad of things which can be displayed on the odometer through some key-turning/button pressing voodoo I was reading about on MINI2. I remember you can view a whole bunch of statistics, fuel levels, and maybe change "display modes" on (guess what) the odometer! Might be related, maybe not - I only suspect unreported tinkering because I'm terminally curious myself AND I just saw where another poster said he clicked over 10k and didn't get that extra leading zero... Be careful not to reset your "service interval" if you go over to the computer's "Dark Side", since it will "start over" (at 15,000, ie the 2nd interval), and no, before you ask, that did not happen to tattman .

It's late, it's raining, and i'm surly,
Tatt

02/16/05 Last & Final Edit: boy was I goofed up. I have about 1900 miles now, and all 6 digits of the digital odometer are lit up "001900" you get the idea - what's worse they always HAVE been... I take back everything I said, ever! You're fine, just fine.

A living testament to the risks involved in recreational chemistry,
Tatt

It's definitely that the 1 in 10000 doesn't take up the entire space for the digital readout. I'm at 12000 and the extra 0 does look like it's floating between the trip and regular odometers. It's like an old-school scoreboard where there is a grid of lights and each number just uses part of the grid.

It won't go away until you hit 20000 and the 2 fills the void!

Cheers,

Werid. I just noticed that mine does this now. It never did it before my first service.

Using your odomerter, mine would look like 0 11293. There is a full space there, not just room around the skinny little "1". Gremlins afoot I fear!

Thanks for the feedback folks!

Red,

Are you afraid of a little dealer? So are you under warrenty but don't want the hassle of taking the car in?

He he,

In another 89440 miles the "ghost" 0 should fill in rather nicely.

It is normal. When the "1" becomes a 2, 3 or 4 it wont look as funny. There are a couple 1's in this shot.

Definitely not. There is an entire space in between, but thanks.
But I will let you know at 20k!

Little old MINI has been flatbedded back to the dealer 7 times. So I am not afraid of them at all. Just getting a little too attached.

This picture sure helps. So the question is, if there is no zero preceding 9,999 miles, at 10,000 suddenly a zero does proceed it?

If so, I can deal with the very wide spacing, and go back to spacing out.

Thank you all for helping with Zero.

Red

Thanks Justgo4it. You know what they say: "Don't hurt the running of it"!
So I will concentrate my focus out the windscreen from now on.

It's probably just me but I think it's weird how I tuned out the zeros which were there the whole time, when I had (very) low mileage. By the time I (we) broke 100 (and caused a "zero to one" change) my brain had thoroughly dismissed the 4 zeroes on the left... Total urban legend internet material... (Twilight Zone Theme cue...) I'm sure I'm not the ONLY one who saved those weird optical illusions sent by email from friends...

Oh and Red did you notice that you can see your speed when in REVERSE?
Never mind I won't encourage looking Forward while rolling BACKwards!
