Hello, I recently had my 06 Cooper S parked for 3 years due to a transmission issue. I have always turned it on and let it warm up to not let the battery die and has turned on with no issues. I also added a fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from going bad. As of last month i tried to start it and would not start and only crank. I tried until the battery died. I checked all fuses and they were good. I then suspected the fuel pump and removed the fuel sending unit and replaced filter and gaskets. When I got to the actual fuel pump, I noticed one of the plastic flex hoses (brown one with metal clip) on the pump itself was broken off. I am not sure if that happen by itself or when trying to remove the pump itself. The hose cracked and was very brittle amd smallet pieces all ver the tank floor which I cleaned out. Once I removed the pump, i also noticed the protection coating around all the cables had worn off and would fall off if I touched it. I then syphoned all the old gas just in case.
I have added some photos of the pump that came off and the broken hose + peeled wiriing on the pump. My question is, is there an issue with those wires being that way and if they were to touch each other cause some sort of short, spark, fire etc? Second am I able to replace the hose that broke by itself without buying the whole pump? I wanted to reinstall the pump in hopes that it would not start due to the broken hose before shelling out on a new pump. I appreciate any and all help on this issue. Thanks!
So I just received the new fuel pump and when installing it, the black hose from the fuel filter sending unit to the fuel pump broke!!! I am FURIOUS!!!!!! When fitting it into position it just snapped.
I now have to figure out what to do as that hose appears to be sold together with the filter sending unit everywhere i've looked and cannot find it by itself. I was thinking of putting some sort of adapter fitting to add another piece of hose from there to the pump inlet but IDK if that would work as the hose would need to withstand fuel. Any suggestions?
Here is a photo of the hose that snapped. And also some of the coating on the wires on this sending unit appears to be gone. Im assuming its ben this way as thats how it looked when removed so would it be safe to say nothing should happen if they touch each other while on and running?

Well i bought a new aftermarket off ebay and arrived yesterday. Today I decided to go to they junk yard and get a fuel sending unit and found a 2008 that was clean and had both sending unit and fuel pump (OEM)…Grabbed those 2 for the price of the aftermarket one, installed them today and car started right up. All is good now. Will be returning the aftermarket pump.
