2002 Cooper not starting / fuel pump relay

Hey all

Just wanted to share my adventures tracking down my no start issue. I had just bought an 02 cooper launch edition. The previous owner mentioned it may need a new fuel pump. Because it was making noise. I never had any issues for the first week until it started to get cold. So that had me thinking battery, but after swapping batteries the issues continued. Pulled the rear seat out and disconnected the fuel pump because I couldn't hear it prime. Put my meter on pins 2 and 5 to check for voltage and got nothing when key was turned on. So went to check relay and heard it clicking on but since voltage wasn't present at pump I figured the contact possibly was burnt. Swapped it with the next relay which I think is for 12v outlet and Voilà all is well! Bought a new relay at the local dealer for $20 and I'm back driving! Thought I would share this so maybe you can save a few bucks and try the easy fixed before dropping $300+ on a fuel pump. I'm going to try an attach a woring diagram so people can check the pinout

Where is fuel pump relay?

MCS won't start. Changed fuel filter. Black and dirty. Now thinking fuel pump. Was making sounds before car started dying on highway like it was running out of gas. Will check fuse first, but can't find location of relay before I buy new pump. Thanks.

Is your CEL on? Check the electrical connections to the pump before you replace it to make sure that it's not an electrical problem. We have a great DIY here for the pump and filter replacement. Gives you some ideas of what to look out for with a failing pump. Fuel pumps here if needed.

I tried the relay swap and it did not work. I did replace the fuel filter already. I have zero fuel flow at the rail. Any other thoughts on what I should check prior to buying a Pump assembly? PS the #20 fuse is good, The car has been sitting for 2 years.

Sounds like a bad pump. Only thing i can think of is the seal that connects to the top of the fuel tank is not seated, those things are a little of a pain.
