I was thinking about this some more and one possibility is that the clutch fork is bent. Not sure if you can diagnose this without dropping the gearbox. The slave cylinder hole does give you a view on a small part of the fork
Mine did the same thing. It was an issue with the clutch assembly. For some reason the new LUK brand clutch had decided it would not engage. (It was a few months old and had worked). I swapped the clutch for a Valeo brand and no more issues. You can read more about it here. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-ideas-13.html

Issue stars around post #304 and goes on to #340
thats was very helpful. thank you. your situation sounds very much like mine. looks like im in for a new clutch...
We've all been there, hopefully your new clutch will show up soon.
I'm hoping I don't have to take out the subframe anytime soon. Funny to see some many people have that type of transmission floor jack. Here in Europe it's either the Draper or Sealey brand, in the USA it always seem to be the HF or Pittsburgh.

Definitely a clutch issue , because I recently purchased a JCW with this exact same problem and after tearing down discovered clutch & throwout bearing shot…

thank you for the reply, tombstone. I'm taking the opportunity to do some other needed maintenance while the subframe is out
no activity on the clutch replacement yet. i was able to do some work on the subframe while it is out.
-new control arm bushings
-new swaybar bushings
-new inner and outer ball joints
-new power steering hoses and reservoir
-new tie rods (not installed just yet)
Note on the control arm bushings, this (pic attached) assembly lube makes install a breeze. without it, nothing but curs words...
I got the trans out. Looks like it had the stock clutch (Luk) in it. Looked ok at first, was not too worn, but then, on closer inspection, THIS. The pressure plate is broken! Everything else was in order. So mystery solved. I'm going to replace and put everything back together.
