I did a couple of searches and had no luck but I can't possibly be the first person to ask...
I have the original nav/computer screen in my 2004 R53. The screen has been absolutely destroyed. I don't believe it is something that could be wet sanded and polished out like headlights - or could it?
If I purchase one of the head until from eBay or elsewhere is it a simple plug and play swap? I've read conflicting reports but is it necessary to have the system installed or could I replace it with something like an ultra gauge? Do you folks recommend anything in particular?
If someone with better search skills than me wants to just point me to a good thread that works. Or answer here if you like -ANY help or thoughts are appreciated
Any center unit, NAV, speedo, or chronopack is not plug and play since the VIN, mileage, and options are programmed into the unit and are not easily changed unless you really know what you’re doing and have the right programs and equipment. There are a few members on here who have the knowledge and have posted successful results who might be able to help. Search for a chronopack retrofit thread for more details about the center units. Not sure if a chronopack is compatible with a pre facelift car, but the programming info should be the same.
I think the screen itself could be considered plug and play but you would still need to have the ability to remove it from your center unit and solder the replacement back on the board.
Any details or pics of the screen damage?
An ultra gauge or cell phone can be mounted over the screen if the screen can’t be repaired.
Thanks, that is kind of what I was expecting. I'll post a picture in a bit, but it is really damaged. I think I could do the wet sanding etc. and make it smooth, but the anti-glare coating would be gone for sure.
Can part#1 come apart/be disassembled?
If so; you may be able to opt for ordering a small sheet of non glare plexi and swap out the old one.
Unless it is a touch screen/digitize cover screen - Homeboy Depot has non glare plexi listed on their website. I'm sure there are other/better sources that may offer exactly what you need.

Just a thought.
That's brilliant and I have no idea why I didn't think about it!
Never realized part 1 had a ”screen protector “, unless the diagram is incorrect. Can’t tell from the pics in the following thread, but maybe the thread starter has info on whether it exists, or how hard it would be to replace just the LCD on part 2.

I won't be sure until I take it out and take it apart. It looks like a few screws hold the parts together. I see what looks like a screen on the drawibng, but looking at hard parts it doesn't look that way. It will be interesting to see...
The guys at Bimmer Tech said that if you are only replacing the screen you do not need to program anything. I'm not sure if they meen litterally the screen or the upper nav head. It may be the coding is contained in the unit under the seat?
Is part#3 just a bezel or does it incorporate the non glare screen protector?
It looks like just a bezel. As soon as my hip feels up to it I'm going to go pull the unit out of the car to get a better look.... I just had a hip replaced Tuesday so I'm not sure I feel up to taking anything apart just now
