no odometer - instrument cluster swap compatibility
hi all, i have an 02 mini cooper s that i picked up a few months ago. the odometer doesn't work. the other lights do work, though. and so does the speedo.
i am thinking it could be as simple as the screen is broken. or maybe it's more. i don't know. however, i found an 06 in the JY and the cluster looks almost identical, save one little symbol on the gauge. for the price of the JY cluster, i'm willing to give it a go and swap. however, before i do, i thought i'd ask if they're compatible. maybe it will fix the prob maybe it won't. but if they're compatible i'll give it a shot.
Here's the junkyard cluster. It's an 06, convertible, supercharged
down by the little button on the bottom right hand corner of the gauge is an symbol that kinda looks like a Mazda logo. that's the only thing i see different visually.

Just remember that the miles an vin are stored in the center cluster. So when you install new gauge you will have what ever mileage that was on the donor car. An you will also have a vin mismatch flag if it is ever serviced.
Yea, but right now I have no idea what my mileage is anyway, sooo...
The problem this presents isn't with anything mismatching with a switch. The problem is that I have no way to track my mileage, and therefore all the things that come along with knowing your mileage like oil, air, fuel, and cabin filter change intervals as well as your gas mileage - helpful for monitoring engine health.
I just need to know if it'll even work. I'm new to minis so I'm not sure what all interchanges yet.
Besides the VIN and mileage being stored in the main center cluster, be it a speedo, NAV screen, or Chrono-pack, the center cluster also is programmed with all(some?) of the options of the car and drives the idiot lights, turn signal indicators, etc. on the steering column gauge(s). If not programmed correctly, the wrong lights will light up on your tach and/or speedo. Also, besides displaying the wrong mileage, there’s a tampered mileage indicator dot that’s supposed to appear next to the displayed mileage if the computer realizes the mismatch. The difference, especially if the new mileage is lower, could possibly cause registration issues and leave you with a true mileage unknown title which wouldn’t be good if you ever want to resell the car.
BTW, little Mazda logo is an analog clock face set at 10:10, the time used in most clock ads, and the button should set the time and reset the trip meter.
Thanks for the link. I searched for compatibility but didn't find anything.
My title says "exempt" on the mileage because it's old enough that they don't care. The odometer was out when I bought it. That's no problem at all. It's not a complicated situation, really. The car last had something like 135,000 according to a vin check before the PO bought it a couple years ago. However, they didn't put many miles on it. So, maybe they drove it 10,000 - 20,000 miles. We'll split the difference and call it 15,000. So call it 135k + 15k = 150k estimated miles. whatever the mileage is of the new odometer now translates to 150,000. But, I'm only really concerned about keeping up with the maintenance schedule.
that said, the different lights flashing could pose a challenge. I'll have to read the thread and see what comes up. I was really expecting it to have been answered before but I just couldn't find the info.
I understand what your asking. I don't have an answer...but another question....
Speedometers at the salvage yards in my area (ATL), are $20. Pretty cheap. I suppose...
However, at what cost? = Wouldl trying to swap out your original with a used (mismatched) speedo cause any further complications with other components (i.e.: ECU), if it didn't work and try to put the original back in?
I tried to avoid using the word "irreparable" in the last sentence.

it'll be about $40 to do, plus the time and effort. from what i've been able to find, i think i may get it and try to swap just the display and leave the rest. they'll fit and connect, but it won't work properly. and, it's in the 90s by the time i get up right now. so, in addition to the money, i'm unmotivated to spend a couple hours to go sweat my *** off to buy something that won't work. haha
If faced with the same dilemma, I'd try to find a year-and-model specific cluster. You'll have a better chance of success that way. Check with a local salvage yard and ask them to go on their parts finder for you or see if you can find an on-line search engine.
