Wheel speed sensor cel

Hello everyone,
I just finished rebuilding my entire suspension. The front got new hubs, axles, powerflex bushings, ball joints, Porsche brakes, refinished control arms, etc. Everything is new including the wheel speed sensors.

Now that I've got everything back together and on the road I am getting a right front wheel speed sensor error. I didn't have this error prior to the rebuild. I've removed it and cleaned it a couple of times. It is triggering my dsc, abs and tire pressure lights. It's also keeping my cruise control from working.

Does anyone have an idea of how to test a sensor? My original ones got destroyed because they were seized in the steering knuckle.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Brad

Sometimes it’s not the sensor it’s a dirty hub. Sensor is reading toothed ring on hub…

try swapping sensors left to right

If you have a decent scanner like Foxwell or Schwaben you can read the sensors while rotating the wheel. After I upgraded My rear suspension to R56, I found my abs module was bad and giving me false speed sensing.

I'll check tomorrow to see about my scan tool. I know it had a real time setting. I also have a scan gauge ii. Maybe between the two of them I'll be and to check for any signal at all. A little worried right now that somehow my hub replacement didn't include the toothed insert. Thanks for the input everyone.

I had a brand new sensor that came with the car (can't remember what brand) that refused to work right, intermittent CELs. Replaced it with a Hella brand and haven't had a problem since. Not too expensive, $50 from rock auto.

Also, can't you pull out the sensor and put something in the hole to feel if its toothed or not?

Thanks again to everyone for the input. My lazy butt didn't get out to the car yesterday. Going to try and get to it today. I ran a q tip down the hole the other day and rotated the hub to see if there was grease on the hub. I didn't notice and teeth at the time, but I want feeling for those either. I may have gotten a crap hub. We'll see. I'll post when I get to it today... Hopefully!!!

I thought I'd add a pic of the hub I used. Can someone point out where the abs sensor ring is?

Now Im starting to doubt my memory. I know the ring shows on other bmw’s…

might be internal on the mini

The right and left sensor are the same part number I think. If so, swap them. That will tell if it’s the sensors or something else

I thought it was the black ring which has a magnet(s) embedded inside and the sensor calculates the rotational speed based on the pulses it picks up.

The ring it measures is above the black part of the hub. It is the little lip that the black part is in. It is placed a little behind where it is mounted to the knuckle.

Ok, so I am just recently retired and trying to get lots of things in order. The mini unfortunately is at the bottom of the list. But, I finally got send to swapping sides in the sensor. Lol and behold I now get an error on the driver's side instead of the passenger's. Yay! It may simply be a bad sensor.

I will go back through the thread to see who suggested I swap them. I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't think to try that before starting a thread. I'll order another sensor and see if that does indeed cure the issue.

Thanks again. Sorry for the slow responses.

Remember to buy a quality sensor. By from FCP euro, lifeitme warranty on the part no matter what. CHeap sensors sometimes just dont work or break with in days or weeks.

yep..I agree. The replacement sensors were Bosch OEM. Bought online and will try to return it once I verify the replacement works.

Here is the DIY https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-sensor-431067

Whats when you install the sensors, all the info here, when i did mine i cleaned out the old location, as the new one can snap if forced in.

Thanks ECS. I just really stink at searching because I didn't get either of those threads to pop up when I searched. I'll certainly let everyone know if the replacement sensor solves the problem.

Yep, welcome. You can find threads by using the search up above and the oem part number here, one other trick is to use google, put in the terms with northamericanmotoring and it will put up thread also.

Finally got around to swapping in the new sensor. Sure enough everything is fine. Just had a bad sensor. Frustrating, but not the end of the world. Thanks to everyone who replied and helped.
