R50/53 Suspension mods
Suspension mods
Just in case anyone was considering the same change, I swapped out my R53 Sport Plus suspension struts (front & back) with new standard rate S suspension struts from Rock Auto. Now the new ones are a bit confusing because they're listed for both a base and an S model which I would have thought would have different spring rates. The Sport Plus suspension was rattling my brain, especially after installing poly bushings in the rear trailing arm and control arms -- lots of additional noise also. After the new struts -- wow, what a difference! Not only is it much quieter but the difference in ride quality is really astounding -- much, much smoother and much, much more enjoyable. I feel like I could actually take a road trip in it now and not need a chiropractor when I arrived at my destination. The rear struts are a piece of cake to change, the fronts not so much. Still it was only a half a day's work and is well worth the cost and labor. By the way, I ordered pretty inexpensive struts (FCS) from Rock Auto but the quality is pretty good and the fit was fantastic. If I have to replace them in a year, so be it but I'll gauge how they perform and take it from there.
Bringing this thread back. I was just curious for an update on how the fcs struts held up from rock auto. Did you order just the struts or the full assemblies?
I have Megan coilovers and want to go back to a stock ride.

I ordered the FCS strut assemblies and my recommendation would be to avoid them. The upper strut mount is very weak and it started hitting the upper spring mount inside 12 months. I replaced them with Monroe strut assemblies and the difference is amazing.
I'm still going round and round and round on coilover options.

I cant recall but I think both? Here is the link to the info and the manual. But I know it can be done with preload but I also think there was a strut length adjustment too. The bottom line for me is they rock. Expensive YES. But the ride quality is amazing, especially on the street.

Yeah fully understand. My mc40 is pretty much a no expense spared affair. Engine alone has over 15k in raw parts. But gotta pay to play for that 318whp 290wtq
