What is the worst case scenario: 2005, 90k with a hard shift

Hi, all!
I am looking for an R53. I found a 2005 S in great shapewith less than 100k for $3500. But, the guy told me it has a transmission problem where it has a really hard shift, and they don't want to fix it.

So, my question is, what is the worst-case scenario, and how much will that run me?

I suppose it would be a complete transmission replacement, and that would run me, what? $3000? Or is it likely not that extreme?

Thanks!

Check the clutch slave. That's what the problem was for mine. I knew it right away from seeing videos regarding it and reading up on the forums. If that may be the problem it's an easier but hard and annoying fix. Lol if that makes any sense.

Yeah, that makes sense, but I have no way to check this, as the car is on a lot. Also, I have no means to fix this or any other mechanical problem myself. I would have to take it to a shop to get it fixed.

Thanks for the information!

3500 seems pretty steep of a price... You can find one with a few more miles running perfectly for that price.... Mine was high miles but amazing condition for them at 190k but I paid 2200 and it had some great mods on it be for hand but I don't think the seller was aware of all that was done to it.

I guess I should have mentioned that it is an automatic transmission. Also, I have no way to work on the car myself. I am not a car guy in any sense of the word, so any problems will have to be fixed at a shop.

I just missed out on a 2005 with 96k for $5000. : (

Thanks for your input! After a little more research, I might be willing to go with a 2011-2013 to get the benefits of the N18 engine.

The shfiter is stiff or it's really in the transmission, like the synchros going bad? If the shifter is stiff, it could be the cables. Sometimes the boots will crack, water will get in and make the cables rust.

It is going from one gear to the next that is not smooth.

Wait. What? Automatic 2005? That would be a CVT and it doesn't really shift gears. It smoothly transitions all the time. When is it hard shifting? Only when putting in gear?

It is an S, so it doesn't have the CVT.
