R50/53 3 Months and Some Thoughts
3 Months and Some Thoughts
Good morning, group. I'm a pretty new member here and haven't posted much, but would like to share some thoughts about my MCS.
I took delivery of my '05MCS in late September. From what I understand, it's a 9/04 build. I ordered it just the way I wanted it and went through the obligatory wait, which was hard...my 2 month wait and 27K finally paid off...
I've had it now for 2.5 months and here are my impressions...
The car looks fantastic and is great fun to drive, but there are some issues that are dissapointing to say the least.
The first is the dashboard rattle. From what I've read, this has been a problem since day one and apparently has never been fixed.
The second is the rattle that has begun from somewhere up behind the headliner. I have the factory security system and am not sure if that has something to do with it or not.
The third, and most bothersome, is the "whining" I hear when sitting still with the car running in neutral. The sound goes away when I push the clutch in and is markedly worse when everything is cold. It's still audible after warm-up, but is barely perceptible.
I've read a lot of posts dealing with the third issue...everything from a bad throwout bearing to just a normal Getrag noise. I definitely don't buy the latter because if it's a "normal" noise, it should have been present the day I picked up the car...it started about 3 days ago.
Anyone have any ideas? Is the third issue something I should have addressed immediately?
Overall, I'm disappointingly less than impressed with the quality of the car. The car looks great and is a blast to drive...it's just that if I start having to make trip after trip to the dealership to have quality issues addressed, I'm afraid the horse won't live in my stable for very long.

Well I have had my MC since June. It was an 04/04 build. I have no dash rattles I hear the fan once in a while. I barely hear the cold weather beeping under the sound of my music. I am totally happy with mine.
I just wish I knew who else had a Solid Golid MC? I have only seen 1.

Do you have all your trips to the service department documented with yoru complaints??? I don't know where you got it to say if your service department is outstanding or just satisfactory, but I would try taking all the service receipts with you next time and let them know that this has been ongoing and that you would like it resolved. If they see the documentation, then they should find the problem with it. Try that and best of luck!

dealer insisted dash rattle didn't exist
I found mine to be caused by the top of the dash rattling against the glass at the forward edge of the dash.
I slid a few pieces of black felt - 1 inch squares doubled over between the edge of the dash plastic and the glass which provide a bit of a buffer up there.
That one's gone......
Took a long time to find as when I pressed lightly on the dash almost anywhere the rattle would stop. I was convinced it was in the ducting but read about this fix elsewhere. 100% success.
good luck

Don't give up on it yet; these are very minor (though irritating) problems and can be solved under warranty. We all want/expect perfection but in reality we can always find something to moan about. Now if the engine explodes or the gearbox drops out I'd be mighty pi**ed. I've purchased many, many new cars (including a couple of Porsches) and your "problems" are really minor, believe me....
Man!.... reading threads like this make me appreciate my Cooper S even more. My pride and joy has never ever EVER given me any kind of problems. Either that, or I love him so much that I'm blind to any problems he may have.
Yay for Camel. Yay for MINI. Yay for My Cooper S. Best Cooper S in the world. /kisses hugs Camel.

If you have a moonroof the headliner rattle could be the wind deflector not seating properly when closed--easily fixable by the dealer. Most of my small rattles/squeaks/buzzes are pavement specific, and are worse in the cold. But I don't let it get to me. After all, I bought a MINI, not a Lexus. Jimbo
