Locksmith can make you a working key even if you have NONE.
I bought a non-working 2005 Mini Cooper S (hatchback, automatic Aisin transmission.) It does not have "comfort access".
First thing was to get it to crank. I searched up and down and everyone said I need to go to dealer and let them rip me off.
I did go and ask. They HAVE TO HAVE the title under my name before they would do it. They want it prepaid and wait for 2 weeks and I might have to tow the car there to confirm it is working.
I have not transferred title and don't plan to unless I know the engine and transmission are good.
So, I found a local locksmith who said he could do it. I had doubt but I thought if I hold on to my money until he is done, no risk for me.
I want the key to lock/unlock 2 doors and hatchback using the metal blade.
I want the remote buttons to work to lock and unlock doors and back remotely.
I want it with working immobilizer so as to crank and start the engine.
He did it and I was happy to give him the $240.

How did he do it?
First, he used his decoder (like this) to decode the key code and cut it.

That allows him to lock/unlock all doors and turn ignition.
Then, he took off the EWS module by one screw. It is located right under the dash on the left side.
Then he opened up to access the electronic and probed to a contact point with his "device" which is connected to his laptop running some software (I did not catch what software). It was doing some decoding and he used another device to program the key. I saw the "programmed successfully" message. The key was then able to crank and start the engine. Then, he did some magic dance with the key, pressing the button numerous times, turning key in ignition on/off/on/off, stepping on the brake, etc.... Then the remote buttons lock and unlock the doors.
All this for about 30 mins and he came to me.
It is much better than going to the dealership. I HATE DEALERSHIPS!

I am in the SF Bay area. He said there are about 2-3 locksmiths who are equipped to do it in the area.

I am passing this info so that you know you might a choice other than the dealership. Good luck.

Made me go look. Jan. 2015 I had an area dealership replace a key for my '06 R52, total charge w/tax was $165.95. I've read herein a wide variety of prices having been charged and yours lands pretty close to the average. This is the first time I've read of one being completely prepped sans dealership. Good find.

I guess that eventually everything that is made to be locked safe will be unlocked by a clever bunch of people.

I share the dealership feelings as an out of warranty owner.

My dealership quoted me about $200 for a complete working key with remote control access. Takes about a week to get it once ordered

It is a big difference if you have a working key.
Also makes a difference if you have the round "comfort access" smart key that you don't have to take it out of pocket to start engine.
And if you don't have any working key and a title under your name, forget dealership.

No, it doesn't....I did not have a working key on my R53....just had to produce title and drivers licence.....didn't have a working key on my R52 either....that car is next for a new key...just have to prove ownership

I see.
So, if you have lost your last key, try your luck with your local dealer first and keep in mind an auto locksmith is always an option (if you can one locally that can do it.)

I tried every locksmith up here...nobody could make me a key....

The cheapest place I found to get a correct key is Mini of Peabody....or so I have heard.....under $200 per key
