Power steering fan

Does the power steering fan run when the key is just turned on, not car running? I mean mine does, better question I guess is it supposed to lol. When I turn the key on, it kicks on and its pretty loud/noticable. I have never had or been in another mini before, so not sure how its supposed to sound. Just checking if its going out or I should be looking at replacing it before getting car back together and on road.

hmm. Not really related or helpful, but I think mine stopped working. I remember it used to be really loud when the car was new - it was a very distinct sound. Now that I read your post, I realized my fan doesn't run anymore. Not for a long time I think.

I think if your AC is on, then it will run.

Okay so the a/c is 100% off, it should not be running? Does it mean bad relay or something if it is running?

Also, not doubting anyone just making sure you know it is my power steering fan running, the little one under the car, not the efan on radiator. Does it really run with the a/c turned on?

I think the loud noise might be your pump! If that is the case then it might be close to pooping itself. You will know if you lose power steering. You would have to muscle the steering wheel to turn the car. That tiny power steering fan under the car turn on when the AC is on, or when the car gets hot... basically it runs the same time as the radiator fan will run when the car gets hot... i believe...

The nosie is def fan, when i turn the key on it cuts on and ramps up to full speed, even with A/C off. And the steering is still easy, fluid not low.

There was a recall on a lot of the R53 power steering fans and pumps, might be worth checking your recall status and seeing if yours is included. My '02 was replaced last year for free.

Oh wow thanks, that is actually the only 1 outstanding for my vin lol. Car is not currently moving though, I have to replace the supercharger before I can get it in any place. I guess I will hold off any diagnoses or messing with stuff until I get this taken care of.
